3 Elements of Drama ISN notes
Cast of characters: All the performers in a drama Chorus: group of actors that comment on the play Act: The main divisions of drama/major sections of a play Scene: the smaller divisions or sections within an act Setting: the place and time the action takes place Narrator: Actor who speaks only to audience about the story Stage directions: the directions telling the characters how to speak or act; the directions telling how sound, lighting, and props are used. Stage left: Same as audience right Wings: sides of the stage not seen by the audience Elements of Drama ISN notes Drama is a story that is written to be performed by actors for an audience. It may be a film, a television show, or a stage play.

Dialogue: the lines spoken by the characters Prologue: Introductory section of the play Types of plays: Comedy- A funny or amusing play Tragedy- A play with a sad or unhappy ending Comic Relief: Humorous actions or words put in a serious play * ISN- Right side- take detailed notes. Left side- Provide examples, pictures etc. that help remind you of this lesson.

7 Setting ISN notes Setting: In a drama, the setting is a brief description of the time and place and any other factors that directly affect the characters or the plot. Mood: atmosphere, of the drama. For ex. The setting might make a character relaxed, cheerful, anxious, fearful, or angry.

9 Plot ISN Notes Plot: a series of events where the characters try to solve a problem or attain a goal. In a drama, the plot unfolds over the course of one or more acts. Exposition- introduces the characters, setting and conflict Rising action- includes the plot events that lead to climax Falling action- is the part of the plot that leads to resolution Resolution- is how the conflict is solved or not resolved

11 Dialogue ISN notes Dialogue: lines spoken between two or more characters. Most of what you learn about the characters comes from what they say, how they say it, and how other characters respond. Dialogue can move the plot forward, trigger characters response, or cause the action to move to a different setting. It can also provide clues to a character’s education, background, or nationality.

Dialogue contains figures of speech: Idiom- a common phrase that has a different meaning than the meaning of its individual words. Adage or proverb- an old saying that expresses an accepted truth about life.

15 Point of view isn notes Point of view The angle of vision from which a story is narrated. See Narrator. A work's point of view can be: first person, in which the narrator is a character or an observer, respectively; objective, in which the narrator knows or appears to know no more than the reader; omniscient, in which the narrator knows everything about the characters; limited omniscient, which allows the narrator to know some things about the characters but not everything.

Monologue: a speech given by one actor Soliloquy: a speech in which a character reveals his or her thoughts and feelings to the audience but not to the other characters. Aside- is a comment made to the audience that is not heard by the other characters Dramatic irony: is created when the audience knows more than one or more of the characters do. Verbal irony: is when a character says the opposite of what he or hshe really means. Depending on the context, it may show sarcasm or humor.

18 Theme isn notes Theme: central message the author wants to convey to readers. It may be a statement about life or the way the world works. In a drama, the themes is often alluded to in the title and at the beginning of the play. Look for ways in which the characters respond to other characters, the setting, and the events to reveal aspects to the theme. Repeated phrases, details, or symbols ay also help identify the theme.

20 Antiquated language ISN Notes
Antiquated Language: a language that was used in the past. The words thou and thee, for example, are antiquated words for the pronoun you . When you see antiquated word or phrase, use context clues to help you figure out its meaning.
