2. Background of MAARA Established in 21 October 2008
Founded by Mr Gwee Bok Wee
197 members consist of used part trader, part-remanufacturer and workshop.
Recognize as sole window to Malaysian auto recycling industry by MAI in beginning in 2011

7. Gradual Phase Out of Imported Used Parts and
Crisis for MAARA
In 2009, the Malaysian Government through the National Automotive Policy introduced several subpolicy which affects the Automotive Recycling Industry.

Safety and environmental concerns rose from the practice of importing used parts and components without any restrictions or mandatory tests. The NAP Review is introducing a mechanism to prohibit imports of used parts and components, effective from June 2011

8. Solutions
MAARA appointed an academic professor team from local universities i.e. UTM & UUM
Spent RM 96,000 for the research
195 pages report findings presented with interview, statistic and figures from all source.
Reports known as A Comprehensive Study for Presentation as a Response on the National Automotive Policy to the Government

9. Report findings
Increased road accidents not the result of using imported used parts
It might due to external environment hazardous, driver negligence, uses of imitated part etc
Imported used parts do not pollute the environment.
Parts are “clean” i.e. free from lubricant, gases, oil etc.
Trader dispose metal, tire, battery and plastic to respective legitimate recyclers to generate income.

10. Challenges for MAARA To establish a standard for used parts.
To develop a set of standard operation procedure for industry
implement human capital development program for auto recyclers
To outreach awareness program among the auto recyclers and public through serial off workshop, seminar or roadshow

11. Moving Forward Continue working closely with MAI.
Cooperation with SIRIM working group to establish Malaysian ELV standard.
Creating public awareness by publishing quarterly magazine – My Auto Recycling
Introducing ATF Insurance scheme with guideline to govern the industry.
