1 Representation in Media
Why it matters and why whitewashing is wrong

2 What do these four people share?

3 What they’re supposed to be
Christian Bale (British Actor) was cast to play an Egyptian leader Emma Stone (American actress) was cast to play a Half Japanese character Scarlett Johansen (American actress) was cast to play a Japanese actress John Wayne (American actor) was cast to play famous historical figure Genghis Khan

4 The effects of whitewashing
It’s highly offensive. To have a POC to be played by a Caucasian actor is the very definition of white washing. It betrays the very culture it tries to portray. It also robs roles of people of color when there aren’t many to begin with.

5 Popular movie main leads
(Jurassic world) A white guy named Chris (Guardians of the Galaxy) A white guy named Chris (Captain America) A white guy named Chris (Thor) A white guy named Chris (Iron Man) A white guy named Chris The main actor in today’s movies is usually if not always a white male. If you look back this has always been the case there are a few exceptions here and there but most of the time your male lead will most likely be a white guy named Chris. Tell me something how would your favorite movies look if the male lead had been changed to a black man or even a woman?

6 Representation just doesn’t cover Race but gender and Sexuality as well
Throughout TV history there have been over 155 deaths with lesbian characters. This trope is called the “Bury your gays” Already in 2016 there have been over six deaths within lesbian characters Character deaths aren’t the only problem

7 Loras Tyrell A popular from the book series A Song Of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) In the book series his character has a characterization of being brave and extremely loyal In the show series his character is only know for being a gay male and being in nothing but sex scenes

8 Reverse Whitewashing? Some might argue that a reverse effect of white washing happens too There have been characters who were white in the original media but then turned black

9 Color being apart of the character
Some figures in media have color be apart of their very character. Whether they are fictitious or not. Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez are two prime examples on why they cannot and should not be white washed. They have to be what they are. Johnny Storm (aka the human torch) and Wilson Fisk (aka the kingpin) Have nothing in their character history that dictates they should be white or even anything else. When it comes to ethnicity it’s not a factor with them.
