2 Defining Hunger For most researchers, hunger is broadly defined as: a state in which a person is unable to provide enough nutrition for him or herself, usually due to economic or geographic circumstances.

3 Hunger in Texas How many are hungry?
At last count, an estimated 4.2 million Texans (18%) lived in food insecure households. This means that at some point in the prior year, these households either experienced hunger outright, or altered its consumption patterns to avoid hunger. For some families this may have meant cutting portion sizes, buying less healthy but more filling food, or skipping meals. For others, the choice may have been between buying food and paying for rent, utilities, car payments or medical bills.
