2016 Maintenance Innovation Challenge
Resilient Integrated Power, Heating, and Cooling System PROBLEM STATEMENT Make resilient power, heating and cooling affordable for every building. Lower installation, maintenance, and 75% lower operating cost than conventional approach. Maintenance schedules, service procedures and operation similar to conventional HVAC systems BENEFITS Energy security provided in single package Without solar field: Immediate payback Lower initial cost than heat pump + back-up generator + uninterruptable power supply. 40% lower energy cost than conventional heat pump With solar field: 75% energy cost reduction 6 year payback (without Federal tax credits) TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION Combined cooling, heating, and back-up power Runs on solar thermal, photovoltaic, natural gas, or grid power Switches to lowest cost energy source. Heating from natural gas provides co-generated electricity at 2.5 ¢/kw-hr. Prototype unit provides 15 tons cooling/heating, 7 kWe back-up power. Hermetically sealed, dual-cycle system. OPERATING COSTS BENEFITS Savings By Region – Solar Option (From DOE BLCC Program) Example Operational Cost Savings Newark, NJ With Federal Tax Credits
