Tobey Shulman Honors English 10
2
Course Description English 10 H
Tobey Shulman, The major purpose of the course is to provide a balanced language arts program that explores literary themes and genres. A series of language activities will enable students to listen, speak, think, and write about literature and connect literature to their own experiences. Through literature-based units, students focus on central issues, discuss meaning, and argue interpretations.
3
Standards: Language Arts
Content knowledge and skills gained during this course will support student achievement of the Language Arts Standards. Upon graduation from the LAUSD, students will be able to: Speak to achieve intended effect using formal and informal conventions of the English language appropriate to varied purposes and audiences.
4
Read interpretively to determine both literal and implied meaning in increasing complex and varied reading material, both assigned and independently selected. Write clearly—using formal conventions of the English language, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, word choice, paragraphing and figurative language—in a variety of writing styles suitable to particular situations.
5
Use the writing process independently—including prewriting, drafting, evaluating, revising, editing, and publishing—to develop and express ideas. Locate, evaluate, and synthesize information for specific purposes, using a variety of sources, including interviews, the library/multimedia center, and a range of current technology.
6
Texts that may be included in this course: Elements of Literature 4th course, Lord of the Flies, Les Miserables, To Kill A Mockingbird, They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky, 1984, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Julius Caesar along with other various short stories, poetry, essays, plays, and autobiographical or biographical selections.
7
Whenever possible, students are given the opportunity to purchase novels to enhance their learning. Students will be expected to write in these books as assigned note- taking, identifying vocabulary from the text, and identifying answers to study guide questions. If students have financial hardships, they should see me privately and we will work something out. I believe this process encourages students to become more involved with the texts.

MARKING POLICY Behavior/Cooperation – Students must follow the basic tenet of respect for themselves and others in the classroom. Any behavior that differs from this will result in a U in cooperation. Work Habits – Students must be on time and turn in all work on time. Students who are not writing when the bell rings will be marked tardy in my roll book. The following charts explain the guidelines for this grade. Missing Grades (per grading period) Tardies (per grading period)

Tardies (per grading period) 0=E 1-2= S 4 or more =U
Missing Grades (per grading period) = E = S 4 or more = U Tardies (per grading period) 0=E 1-2= S 4 or more =U

Academic Grade All work has a point value. Tests and major work will be worth more points than homework and quizzes. On each graded piece of work I will write the student’s points over the points possible and a letter grade. The letter grade is based on a standard percentage grading scale, as is the cumulative grade at the end of each grading period. Students have a Grade Sheet, which is their responsibility to keep up to date. At any point you or your student can figure out his/her grade in class.
11
Formula: students’ total points divided by total points possible = a number; move the decimal in this number to the right two digits for a percentage. Percentage scale is: 90% - 100% = A 80% - 89% = B 70% - 79% = C 60% - 69% = D 59% or below = Fail
12
Homework policy Homework will be assigned when necessary. I do not utilize Homework Hotline, but every assignment and test can be found in each student’s notebook in his/her agendas section. I make students copy detailed agendas daily to make them aware of what will happen that day, to help absent students keep up, and to communicate with parents. Parents should ask to see agendas regularly.
13
My suggestion for homework is that students focus on English for a minimum of 30 minutes, every night, including weekends. If students do not have actual homework, there are other activities he/she can do. Read anything (i.e. books, magazines, newspapers). Write anything (i.e. letters, stories, poetry, journals/diaries). Study for upcoming tests. Review class notes for literature sections Reread literature from class and take more notes.

San Pedro High School Senior Attendance Policy Si le gustara esta información en español, por favor comuníqueses con el Centro de Padres ( ) o visite nuestro sitio web en The administration and staff at San Pedro High School believe that there is a direct correlation between student achievement and in-seat attendance. Classroom instruction & participation, quizzes, tests, and projects completed in class contribute to grades given in all classes. Therefore, absences can adversely affect the grade earned in class. Participation in school activities is a privilege and an incentive for school attendance. Students who are in compliance with the expectations of San Pedro HS and LAUSD for school attendance are permitted to participate in school activities. In accordance with the Los Angeles Unified School District policy, and in an effort to ensure our students’ success, the following attendance policy has been established:
16
San Pedro High School Attendance Policy:
A maximum of 7 full day absences/28 TOTAL class period absences are allowed during the current school year. At the 8th full day absence and/or 29th class period absence, FOR ANY REASON, the student’s name will appear on the Non-Participation STOP CLEARANCE LIST. Students on the STOP CLEARANCE LIST will be prohibited from attending activities. These activities include, but are not limited to: Winter Formal Senior Prom Senior Field Trip Senior Activities (Senior Egg Hunt, Senior breakfast, Senior Extravaganza, Grad Night, etc.) Graduation Ceremony Notification Process Summer Registration Packet/Attendance Policy Course Syllabus/Parent Letter Website: Daily Bulletin Announcements Parent meetings/Senior meetings Letters home of Non-Participation Posting of Non-Participation List on Bulletin Board & Offices Attendance Check as part of the Graduation Clearance Process for all Potential Graduates.

Appeal Process : SENIORS ONLY
Seniors only may make an Appeal for absences which exceed the maximum allowable per year (8 or more full day absences and/or 29 class period absences) according to the parameters below: If a student has 8-14 full day absences and/or class period absences, he/she may only appeal based on the following reasons: 1. Health-Related Absences – If a student has a verifiable health emergency such as hospitalization, chronic illness, or extended care treatments, during the the Semester. All doctor’s/hospital notes must be turned in to the Attendance Office and on file within one week of student returning from an absence. 2. Bereavement -- If the student experiences the death of an immediate family member, an appeal may be made with proper documentation. 3. Extraordinary Circumstances – If a student has an extraordinary circumstance causing excessive absences during the school year, an appeal can be made. Students with 15 or more full day absences and/or 60 or more class period absences will, depending on the circumstances, lose their right to appeal.
18
Possible Outcomes All determinations are at the discretion of the Attendance Committee. Upon filing an appeal (with attached documentation), the student and parent may be required to speak to the Attendance Committee (comprised of teachers, school administration, and Pupil Services & Attendance Counselor). The Attendance Committee can deny the appeal or issue a contract and/or assign the student school service hours. The decision of the Attendance Committee is final. If an appeal is granted and the contract signed: violations of the contract and/or non-completion of service hours assigned will result in the student being put back onto the stop clearance list. There is no opportunity for additional appeals. Any assigned school service hours will not result in the erasure of the absence from school records.
