3 What Is Mental Health? The maintenance of successful mental activity
Includes maintaining productive daily activities and maintaining fulfilling relationships with others. Also includes maintaining the abilities to adapt to change and to cope with stress. Its normal to have a difficult time when feeling stressed, and pressure can build up in many areas of life (socially, in school , at home, and while making big life decision However, if you feel very sad, hopeless or worthless this might be a sign of a mental health problem.

4 How Does Mental Health Occur?
Can occur when the brain (or part of the brain) is not working well or is functioning abnormally. MVA, Trauma, Puncture (Phineas Gage) Railroad construction man who survived an accident in which a large rod was driven completely through his head, destroying much of his left frontal lobe Accident changed his personality and behavior the remaining years of his life Genetics Environment Brain Disorder

Many mental health illnesses begin during childhood and persist into adulthood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

10 Current Knowledge Most people with mental disorders live productive and positive lives while receiving treatments for their mental illness. Some people have severe and persistent mental disorders which response poorly to current treatments Mental illness does not respect any boundaries of race, class, geography, age, or gender The majority of people have a friend, acquaintance or family member who ha or has had a mental disorder 1 in 5 Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime

11 Impact 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14
75% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by the age of 24. The average delay between onset of symptoms and interventions is between 8-10 years. 37% of students with a mental health conditions age 14 and older drop out of school The highest dropout rate of any disability group 70% of youth in state and local juvenile justice systems have a mental illness. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in youth 10-24, 10th leading cause in death in the US 90% of those who died by suicide had an underlying mental illness

15 Disparities in Seeking Mental Health Care
-Higher rates if inpatient care, especially involuntary. -Language barriers -Cultural Competences. At least 1 in 5 resident physicians surveyed (from seven specialties) reported not being prepared to deal with cross-cultural issues Approximately half of residents reported receiving little or no training in understanding how to address patients from different cultures (50%), or how to identify patient mistrust (56%), relevant religious beliefs (50%), and relevant cultural customs (48%)

African Americans: more likely to use emergency services or primary care providers than mental health specialists Asian Americans: Only 4% would seek help from mental health specialist vs. 26 percent of whites Latinos: < 1 in 11 with mental disorders contact mental health specialists, & < 1 in 5 contact primary care providers Native Americans: 44% with a mental health problem sought any kind of help--and only 28% of those contacted a mental health agency

18 Mental Illness in African Americans
Only difference is in gender African American men are 4 times more likely to die by suicide than African American women African Americans are 20 percent more likely to have serious psychological distress than whites are. Less than half of all Americans with a mental disorder get the treatment that they need. But the proportion of African Americans who need mental health treatment and get it is only half that of whites.

Exercise, diet and/or binge-eat obsessively? Hurt other people/destroy property? If you ever feel like any of these, seek help.

Psychotherapy services address the needs of adults experiencing a variety of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, personality disorders, traumatic life events, and relationship impasses. Student Counseling Center UC Rm. 310,   , Mental Health Association of Nassau County P HELP (4357) Examples of difficulties experienced by children or adolescents and their families that are treated at our clinics are: attention problems, anxiety and specific phobias (e.g., social anxiety), depression, grief, behavioral problems, peer difficulties, and parenting challenges.
