Goal: To understand what food is and what food labels are. Standard: NHES#2 – Safe and healthy environment Warm-up: What types of food are healthy for you to eat and why? What is a food pyramid? Create your own critical thinking question.

Notes: * Important Nutrients*
Carbohydrates – provide the major source of energy for the body. Sources are: a. cereal b. fruit c. bread d. some vegetables * Carbohydrates are sugars and starches that occur naturally in foods, mainly in plants.

*Each gram of carbohydrates contain four calories.*
A gram = standard unit of mass (measures a serving size of food) A calorie = is a unit of energy. ( a unit of measurement) Example: 100 calories = is a way of describing how much energy your body could get from eating or drinking it. Calories are energy that fuel our bodies like gas to cars.

2. There are two types of carbohydrates. They are: *Simple carbohydrates - for quick and immediate energy (fruit, many vegetables, milk, and milk products). * Complex carbohydrates – used to supply long-lasting energy (rice, pasta, dried beans, and starchy vegetables like potatoes).
