4 UAS - Passing Trend or Fixture?
Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) - commonly referred to as UAVs or drones, are becoming ubiquitous in our society. On September 28, 2015, FAA Assistant Administrator-Policy, International Affairs and Environment, Rich Swayze, estimated that as many as one-million small UAS might be purchased during the US 2015 holiday season. There is national concern about safety in the utilization of UAS for commercial and recreational use.

5 What is a UA? The Unmanned Aircraft (UA) is the flying portion of the system, flown by a pilot via a ground control system, or autonomously through use of an on-board computer, communication links and any additional equipment that is necessary for the UA to operate safely.

6 What is a UAS? A UAS is the unmanned aircraft and all of the associated support equipment, control station, data links, telemetry, communications and navigation equipment, etc., necessary to operate the unmanned aircraft.

7 Recreational Use of UAS
A UAS is considered to be a model aircraft flown within visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft, and flown only for hobby or recreational purposes.

8 UAS Registration All owners of small unmanned aircraft that weigh more than 0.55 lbs. (250g) and less than 55 lbs. (25 kg) must register with the FAA’s UAS registry before they fly outdoors. The owner must be 13 years of age or older, and a U.S. citizen or legal resident. People who do not register their UAS could face civil and criminal penalties.
