And endless praises crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With every morning sacrifice.

6 People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on his love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His name.

7 Let every creature rise and bring His grateful honors to our King;
Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud “Amen!”

10 The Law, Righteousness & the Kingdom Matthew 5:17-20
Righteousness was a concern of the Jews because they knew it was necessary to receive God’s blessing

11 The Law, Righteousness & the Kingdom Matthew 5:17-20
Jesus did not belong to any sect Not a Pharisee, yet He preached holiness Not a Scribe, yet unmatched in the Scriptures Not a Zealot, yet proclaimed the kingdom of heaven was at hand

12 The Law, Righteousness & the Kingdom Matthew 5:17-20
The question on everyone’s mind was, “could Jesus be the Messiah?” Matthew 5:17-20

13 Jesus & Scripture Matthew 5:17-19
Jesus came to fulfill, not abolish either the Law of Moses or any of the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures All of Jesus’ teaching would have to be in harmony with the Law (cf. vs. 19) The smallest letter was an i and the tittle was the mark that distinguished letters - a t from a i

14 Jesus & Scripture Matthew 5:17-19
Not even the most minor aspect of the Law would pass away until its purpose was fulfilled - Isaiah 55:11 It is absurd to claim to be a follower of Jesus or say He was a good teacher and then reject what He believed

15 Jesus & Scripture Matthew 5:17-19
The events of the Old Testament do not have to be believed for salvation - if that is due to ignorance To knowingly reject what Jesus believed calls into serious question belief in the correct Jesus

16 Jesus & Scripture Matthew 5:17-19
Jesus believed all the Hebrew Scripture The Creation account: Gen. 1 / Mt. 19:4 Noah’s flood: Gen. 6-9 / Lk. 17:27 Destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah: Gen. 19 / Luke 17:28-29 The story of Jonah: Mt. 12:40 A real Heaven & a real Hell: Matt. 25

17 Jesus & Scripture Matthew 5:17-19
Jesus made theological arguments based on verb tenses – Matt. 22:32 cf. Exodus 3:16 If the Old Testament is not true, then Jesus was not a good teacher, worthy to follow, or the Messiah

18 Jesus & Scripture Matthew 5:17-19
The Jews hearing Jesus would need to keep every aspect of the Law & Prophets until all was accomplished – Matthew 5:19

19 Fulfilling the Law Matthew 5:17
This is not “filling out its meaning” so as to complete it - the Old Testament was already complete This is fulfillment by teaching it, exemplifying it and being its consummation

20 Ceremonial Law The ways and means by which God was to be worshiped
The laws of worship were types of Christ which He fulfilled - Hebrews 9:11-12; 10:9-12, 19-25 Jesus became the perfect High Priest that superseded the Aaronic priesthood

21 Ceremonial Law The ways and means by which God was to be worshiped
Jesus fulfills the imagery of the Tabernacle / Temple: Door, altar, laver, lamp, show-bread, mercy seat

22 Ceremonial Law The ways and means by which God was to be worshiped
Jesus fulfills the meaning of the various offerings: Burnt, Grain, Peace, Sin and Guilt

23 Ceremonial Law The ways and means by which God was to be worshiped
Jesus fulfills the meaning of the various feasts & festivals: Passover, Unleavened Bread, First fruits, Tabernacles, Festival of lights, Atonement, etc.

24 Ceremonial Law The ways and means by which God was to be worshiped
The ceremonial law found its fulfillment in Jesus who accomplished all - none of it is required of Christians

25 Judicial Law The actions and behavior that distinguished the nation of Israel from other nations
Jesus kept all these laws perfectly, but not according to the Rabbinic traditions of them Jewish believers are no longer obligated to keep these laws - Acts 10

26 Moral Law Principles by which all men were to live in relationship to God and one another
Jesus obeyed all these and so remained sinless despite being tempted in all points as we are

27 The Continuing Law Matthew 5:18-19
The ceremonial laws are not required of Christians - Colossians 2:16 The judicial laws are not required of Christians - Acts 15

28 The Continuing Law Matthew 5:18-19
We are not under the law, but grace (Romans 6:14), but salvation has always been by God’s grace, not law Those not under grace are still under the law The moral law brings knowledge of sin - the tutor to bring us to Christ (Romans 3:23-31; 7:7-14; Gal. 3:24)

29 The Continuing Law Matthew 5:18-19
The moral law is universal with our obedience demonstrating our love for Christ - John 14:21-23 The Christian is under the “law of Christ” (1 Cor. 9:21) and lawlessness is sin (1 John 3:4)

30 The Continuing Law Matthew 5:18-19
The New Testament contains specific commands concerning: Worship (John 13; 1 Corinthians 11; Matthew 28:20; Romans 6, etc.) Submission to authority (Matthew 22:21; Romans 13:7, etc.) Moral conduct (Matthew 22:37-40; James 2:8; etc.)

31 The Continuing Law Matthew 5:18-19
The righteous obey God’s laws not to get saved, but because they are saved (Ephesians 2:8-10) Because the Holy Spirit indwells the believer, obedience to God is generated internally instead of externally

32 Jesus & Righteousness Matthew 5:20
True righteousness has always been a matter of the heart - Deuteronomy 10:12-16 The Scribes and Pharisees were stiff necked and only had self-righteousness

33 Jesus & Righteousness Matthew 5:20
Luke 18: The parable of the Pharisee and Publican is the classic example Be careful, for the trap of self-righteousness is easy to fall into: It must always be God’ standards, not man’s

34 Justification and righteousness only come to those who humbly seek God for mercy
The Beatitudes describe the characteristics of true righteousness - developed in those changed by God

36 Speak oft with thy Lord;
Take Time to Be Holy # 656 Take time to be holy, Speak oft with thy Lord; Abide in Him always And feed on His Word. William D. Longstaff / George C. Stebbins © Public Domain ARR UBP – CCLI License No

37 Make friends with God's children, Help those who are weak;
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

38 Spend much time in secret
Take time to be holy, The world rushes on; Spend much time in secret With Jesus alone.

39 Thy friends in thy conduct
By looking to Jesus, Like Him thou shalt be; Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

40 Take time to be holy, Let Him be thy Guide, And run not before Him, Whatever betide.

41 In joy or in sorrow Still follow thy Lord, And, looking to Jesus, Still trust in His Word.

42 Each thought and each motive
Take time to be holy, Be calm in thy soul- Each thought and each motive Beneath His control.

43 Thou soon shall be fitted
Thus led by His Spirit To fountains of love, Thou soon shall be fitted For service above.
