4
Working with industry using the considerate constructors’ scheme as a learning environment for civil engineers
5
What is the Considerate constructors scheme (CCS)
Non-profit-making, independent organisation founded in by the construction industry to improve its image. Construction sites, companies and suppliers voluntarily register with the Scheme and agree to abide by the Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements. Scheme is concerned about any area of construction activity that may have a direct or indirect impact on the image of the industry as a whole. The main areas of concern fall into three categories: the general public, the workforce and the environment.
6
CCS Care about Appearance … sites appear professional and well managed
Respect the Community … give utmost consideration to their impact on neighbours and the public Protect the Environment … protect and enhance the environment Secure everyone’s Safety … attain the highest levels of safety performance Value their Workforce … provide a supportive and caring working environment
8
Why include this in a final year civil engineering assessment?
Engages students with industry Focusses on 5 key areas of site life (Community, Safety, Appearance, Workforce, Environment) Provides site experience for CV Develops independent working, teamworking, communication, professional behaviour, presentation skills, report writing, timekeeping Risk assessment and planning for safety Preparation for constructionarium
9
Assignment Activities
Form a team of no more than 5 students Find a site & arrange a site visit Research CCS and prepare a CCS monitor report checklist Identify key activities on site Carry out a risk assessment before the visit Obtain PPE necessary for the visit Attend site visit and conduct mock monitor’s report Report back to site team; innovations, best practice and areas for improvement Ask site manager to complete a feedback form Prepare and present brief presentation to classmates Prepare and submit group report on visit Complete and submit an individual or group participation log
10
Role of ccs monitor – Malcolm viccars
Provides an overview/introductory lecture Provides contacts for sites to visit and acts as an intermediary for student groups Attends the presentations and gives the students feedback on their reports and issues raised.
11
Learning benefits Content of the scheme
Innovations in the construction industry Professional conduct on site Health and safety behaviours on site Situated learning enables students to contextualise their learning
12
Employability benefits
Teamwork Organisational skills Links to employers Enhancement to CV Report writing
13
Future improvements? Students to advise their chosen site in advance to check suitability/health and safety etc. Students to only visit CCS approved sites (to ensure minimum standard of H&S etc.) Write to local sites advising them of the assessment and inviting local contractors to participate. Contact past students to see if they can offer sites/ chaperone students
14
summary Assessment has been running successfully for three years
Has been cited as best practice by CCS and recommended to other universities by senior CCS monitors Provides students with an ‘excuse’ to make contact with a site of interest and arrange their own visit. Enables students to identify the 5 elements of the CCS and to learn more about how it operates in practice Much appreciated by students who are often apprehensive before the site visit but come back full of confidence and enthusiasm for their chosen career Opportunity to develop employability skills, enhance CV and talk about graduate employment.
15
Application to other disciplines
Where will your students be working? Are there any external assessment or accreditation schemes applicable to that workplace? Can you develop an assessment based on one of those schemes? Can you cultivate a monitor or auditor to provide a launch lecture or help with the assessment?
