Humanitarian emergencies: “Deploying specialists to the field earlier in their career path > Anaesthetist residents on 3 month deployments with MSF” Francesco Della Corte CRIMEDIM Stella Egidi MSF Italy Vittoria Gherardi MSF Italy Pier luigi Ingrassia CRIMEDIM Ettore Mazzanti MSF Italy Luca Ragazzoni CRIMEDIM Alba Ripoll Gallardo CRIMEDIM Italy,

Aims of this exercise Answer field needs: shortage-gaps of trained anesthesia providers Train humanitarian workers on cross-professional and specific competencies before first deployment with MSF Increase retention and possible career inside MSF Increase new research initiatives in the field

Innovation Target population: 4th/5th year anesthetist residents
Round tables along MSF know how/CRIMEDIM + literature review built a 4-month course with mixed methodology e-learning / live simulations Course objectives: Prepare candidates for MSF field needs before their deployment > focus on shortage-gap of trained anesthetists Target population: 4th/5th year anesthetist residents Post-course, residents are deployed to the field as MSF expatriates for 3 months

Results Appropriate answers to the field needs, evaluations from the 8 line managers in the different contexts where residents have been deployed. Professional competence was never questioned, highlighted soft skills - Augmented retention > all the 8 participants at the first 2 cohorts recommended and available for further MSF deployment, 3 second deployments already in 2015, 3 in the pipeline for 2016 Possible investment on future key persons inside MSF: Coordinators, Mobile Implement Officer, Referents, Others 9 participants in the 2016 edition

Cost Trainees pay for the course to cover the CRIMEDIM expenses, 1200 euro, Faculty expenses are higher, the most “pro bono” at the moment MSF Italy follows the usual recruitment/validation process for the potential candidates before enlisting them to the course >> no added cost Usual expenses covered by the MSF field project, MSF Italy pays for the global insurance – no income to the person, already with medical training salary (as per Italy rule)

Challenges Pool of “young generation” Medical Doctors falls outside MSF standard selection criteria> end of Residency and at least 2 years working … Amplify the variety of medical specialty training, gynecologists, pediatricians, nurses, midwives …. Funding would need to be sought to make this initiative sustainable

Future plan Transdisciplinary >> Emergency Physicians, Pediatricians already in the 2016 Course. Gynecologists for the future? Paramedical too? Model can be adopted/implemented by other MSF entities or open access to other MSF First deployments nationality Open door to provide CRIMEDIM-MSF Italy guidance for other MSF-Academic partnerships inside and out MSF family
