1 Yield ? Yield-noun:  Performance, yield, efficiency, output, production, product, put. Harvest, crop, harvesting, picking, yield Yield-verb:  produce, yield, result in, generate, bring about, develop yield, give way, make way, give the right of way deliver, give, hand, submit, hand over, yield

2 5 pounds x 10 = 50 pounds (must be collected)
If you have a plantation of tomatoes (10 m2) and you estimate to collect 5 pounds of tomatoes per m2. If you actually collect 35 pounds of tomatoes. What is the percent yield of the crop (production)? 5 pounds x 10 = 50 pounds (must be collected) Theoretical yield Actual yield = 35 pounds = Actual yield = 70 % X = % yield Theoretical yield

3 Theoretical Yield: Is the maximum amount of product that can be produced from a given amount of reactant (calculated from the balanced equation). Actual Yield: Is the amount of product actually produced when a chemical reaction is carried out (experimental data). Percent Yield: Is the ratio of the actual yield to the theoretical yield expressed as a percent.

4 Percent Yield: Actual Yield % Yield = X 100 Theoretical Yield

5 Calculate the percent yield of the reaction if
Examples: Calculate the percent yield of the reaction if 4.8 mol of Al (s) produce 2.1 mol of Al2O3. 4 Al (s) + 3 O2 (g) → 2 Al2O3 (s) Actual yield = 2.1 mol Al2O3(s) Theoretical yield: 4.8 mol x mol 4 mol 2 mol = X = 2.4 mol Al2O3 % yield = x 100 = x 100 % yield = 87.5 %

6 Percent Yield (Example):
2) If 80 g of sodium react with chlorine giving 190 g of salt. Calculate the percent yield of the reaction Na(s) + Cl2(g) → 2 NaCl (s) Actual yield = 190 g NaCl(s) Theoretical yield: 80 g x g 2(23) g 2(58.5) g = X = 203.5 g NaCl % yield = x 100 = x 100 % yield = 93.4 %

7 Percent Yield (Example):
3) If the theoretical yield of a reaction is 35.0 g of product & the % yield is 95 %. How many grams were actually produced? % yield = x 100 95 % = x 100 X = Actual yield = 33.25 g
