The 5 minute design & layout
2
Layout: the rule... this refers to the MAXIMUM ‘allowance’ per slide: four main points (4) six lines per slide (6) Seven words per line (7)
3
Layout: keep it simple... simplify your terminology use 1 word instead of 4 explain your concept verbally... audiences do listen while they watch Use images instead of text when possible
4
Layout: keep it consistent...
use the same typeface throughout use the same background throughout use or create templates avoid ‘jumping’ or animated text
5
Some basic rules Use 2 fonts: 1 for titles, 1 for text or bullets
Keep it simple, use 2 or 3 colors max Use 2 fonts: 1 for titles, 1 for text or bullets Do not use Microsoft Clip Art Do not use Word Art or Comic Sans font Powerpoint has some really terrible color combos
6
Another free resource from www.slidesdirect.com!
Backgrounds: black or white? Projected presentations: Dark background with light text For data projector presentations and output to 35mm slides, dark backgrounds with light text works well. Printed presentations: light backgrounds with dark text
7
Backgrounds: colour comparison 1
White text on a black background is most legible Results in the highest optical ‘acuity’.
8
Backgrounds & text colors
white is best for any dark background yellow also works well cyan can work well but not on green green doesn’t work well on blue or RED!
9
Backgrounds: colour comparison 4
this new found freedom of expression led to some graphic abominations in the name of individualism! if you can’t see any text above this line you are colour blind, it’s miraculous if you can!
10
Layout: in summary... use dark backgrounds and light text
always review with the rule simplify, simplify, simplify Be consistent with fonts & colours

Technical Tips Template or Style Master Slides Slide layouts Use Insert Picture!!

readable at a distance (at least 24pt) easy on the eye
Type: a font must be….. readable at a distance (at least 24pt) easy on the eye appropriate to the presentation format Data Projector - sans serif only Computer Monitor - choose carefully 35mm Slides - no restrictions

one or two fonts per presentation one style of typeface Plain BOLD Italic BOLD Italic
14
DON’T TYPE IN UPPERCASE
Type: use with care... Use italic and bold sparingly for emphasis, and never use underline Underlined text is much harder to read DON’T TYPE IN UPPERCASE Tests have shown this takes 57% longer to read
15

EMPHASISE gesture, vocal tone, modulation maintain eye contact be precise in establishing your proposals be wary of formal language / terminology choose emotive words carefully

Templates: a final caveat...
be aware of transitions & animations… but use with caution… they can be very irritating! avoid using sound effects! avoid fun features - LASER TEXT
