About Tokyo Greater Tokyo is the world's most populous metropolitan area and is the center of Japanese culture, finance, and government. A bustling cosmopolitan city, Tokyo is also a major transportation hub and a world economic and industrial center. The city boasts a large number of world-class institutions of higher education, the highest concentration of universities in Japan. Tokyo was known as Edo until 1868, when the Japanese imperial family was moved there from Kyoto. Estuary - an arm or inlet of the sea at the lower end of a river.

About Tokyo Metropolitan Tokyo is generally defined as the four prefectures of Tokyo, Saitaima, Kanagawa, and Chiba, while the city of Tokyo proper usually refers to the 23 wards in Tokyo prefecture itself. The metropolitan area includes the major cities of Yokohama (the second largest city in Japan), Kawasaki, and Chiba, as well as rural mountain regions west of the city, the Izu Islands outside Tokyo Bay, and the Bonin Islands to the southeast in the Pacific Ocean. Traditional Dishes of Tokyo
Sukiyaki is prepared right at the table by cooking thinly sliced beef together with vegetables, tofu and vermicelli. Tempura is food deep-fried in vegetable oil after being coated with a mixture of egg, water and wheat flour. Among the ingredients used are prawns, fish in season and vegetables. Sushi is a small piece of raw seafood placed on a ball of vinegared rice. The most common ingredients are tuna, squid and prawns. Cucumber, pickled radish and sweet egg omelet are also served.

Sashimi is sliced raw fish eaten with soy sauce. Kaiseki ryori is regarded as Japan's most exquisite culinary refinement. Consisting mainly of vegetables and fish with a seasoning base of seaweed and mushrooms, the dishes are characterized by their refined savor. Yakitori is made up of small pieces of chicken meat, liver and vegetables skewered on a bamboo stick and grilled over hot coals.

Tokyo’s Festivals Asakusa Samba Carnival Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri Koenji Awa Odori Tokyo Bay Fireworks The Asakusa Samba Carnival is held annually, on a Saturday towards the end of August, in Asakusa, Tokyo. Attracting about 500,000 sightseers who fall under the spell of the passionate rhythms of the samba, the event has a strong international flavor. Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri Since it’s summer and it’s supposed to be hot, Japan celebrates this by holding the Fukagawa Hachiman festival, Tokyo’s biggest summer water fight festival. Every year, several mikoshi lines up with dancers and musicians on the streets of Koto-ku and a crowd of spectators cheers them and throws water at them, a belief that the gods (in the mikoshi) enjoy a good summer soaking. Koenji Awa Odori The Tokyo Koenji Awaodori Dance Festival is held every year on the last Saturday and Sunday of August. There are 12,000 dancers performing every year in this parade, dancing their way on the streets of Koenji. Tokyo Bay Fireworks This fireworks festival is held on the second Saturday of August each year at the Chuo City Harumi Gounds, where the two foremost fireworks companies of Japan, namely Hosoya and Marutamaya compete in displaying the most spectacular firework displays for the onlookers.
