1 A Community data set of polar lows
STARS A Community data set of polar lows Yvonne Gusdal, Øyvind Sætra, Steinar Eastwood, Pål Erik Isachsen, Birgitte Furevik, Magnus Drivdal, Johannes Røhrs, Gunnar Noer, Frank Thomas Tveter and Harald Schyberg Norwegian Meteorological Institute Introduction The STARS project is funded by ESA Support To Science Element (STSE) program. In the project, a data set has been build called STARS-DAT, fundamental for most of the studies performed in STARS. Some of the scientific questions to be addressed are: Can satellite IR and PMW observations in combination with altimeter be used to detect possible sea-surface warming caused by strong winds under polar low events? Can we identify a Polar Low Indicator based on satellite data that could be a useful tool for polar low forecasting? The STARS project started in 2009 and goes on until the end of This poster presents the STARS Data Set. More information and details are available at: STARS-DAT, Data set with satellite, NWP and in-situ data over the North Atlantic (>55N) region for all winter months in the period 2002 to April 2011, including tracks of polar low events. The satellite data is included for the the period when the satellite is operational. All data has been gridded to the same grid and projection, and are stored in NetCDF4. Data sources are shown in the table below: ice edge Ice type 1 The complete data-set will be available on anonymous FTP: ftp://ftp.met.no/projects/STARS/stars-dat/v3/ Login: anonymous / password: The full v3 data set will be available 15th June 2012 STARS-DAT database A data base has been built to easily get an overview of polar low events and ease the exploration of the STARS-DAT data set. The data base is built as a image data base of key geophysical variables from STARS-DAT. This data base is available through an on-line PHP interface: Polar Low Polar Low NOAA AVHRR IR image ASAR location NOAA AVHRR IR image ASAR location ASAR backscatter ASAR wind speed ASAR backscatter ASAR wind speed Atmospheric heat potential with polar low track AMSR-E SST with polar low track Atmospheric heat potential with polar low track AMSR-E SST with polar low track
