Reading Relays 5th Grade Ankeny Schools

What Is It? An optional reading competition for fifth grade students.
Students will read “Reading Relay Books” and form a team to compete in the district competition in the spring.

Purpose of Reading Relays
Challenge students to read a variety of literature. Build teamwork and responsibility with peers. Continue to develop good sportsmanship. Encourage students to develop and continue their love for reading.

When Is It? Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Westwood Elementary
The competition will be in held the morning Parents and friends are welcome to attend Prizes are awarded to the top 3 teams

Team Information You will make your own team of four students.
They may be from the same classroom or mixed across classrooms. Team members must be in fifth grade and from your school.

Now What? Step 1: Decide if you are interested. Step 2: Form a Team
Teams can be mixed across classrooms, but must be in the same building. (4 students)

Now What? Step 3: Come to the first Reading Relays meeting over lunch. Date not set yet. If you do not have a team formed but are interested in participating. Please come to this meeting. We will form a team of those students who do not have one.

Now What? Step 4: Divide up the List
As a team you need to read all 24 books! How you divide it up is up to your team. However, if multiple students read the same book, the better chance you will have at knowing the answer. (Two heads are better than one!) Step 5: Practice, Practice, Practice

Now What? Step 6: Compete with your team in the Mini Competition at your school to see which teams will make it to the main competition. Each school will have at least one team participating in the main competition. (Some schools will have more depending on the next top scores) Step 7: On Saturday, April 7th participate in the competition at Westwood

What happens on Competition Day?
You will meet you team at Westwood having read the list of books as team and ready to answer questions. Your team will directed to a specific room. You will compete in that room against three other teams. Example question: In the book, One Handed Catch, what is the name of ….?

What happens on Competition Day?
You will compete in four rounds. The four teams with the top accumulate scores will compete in the finals. Scores start over in the final round and the top three teams will place based on their score in this round.

Prizes Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams
The winning team’s school will receive the traveling trophy that is displayed for the year in the media center. Currently the trophy is at Ashland Ridge.
