3 What will my student be learning this year in ELAR?

4 What will my student be learning in Math this year?
Place value to hundred billions and thousandths. Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals with models and also use the algorithm. Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with models and the algorithm. Simplify expressions by using order of operations. Find the volume of regular and non regular objects. HOW? Daily Math practice using a variety of resources Hands on, using manipulatives and real life examples Relevant, real world scenarios in world problems. Student choice of products. Small group guided math weekly.

5 What will my student be learning in Science this year?
HOW? We will use hands on investigations to study concepts of matter, units of energy, the Earth, Sun and Moon and environmental cycles and changes. The majority of science lessons will be investigative labs entered into the student’s interactive notebook. This is a tool that the student will have all year to help aid in retention of concepts studied throughout the year. It is also a great review tool to help for the STAAR test.

6 What will my student be learning in Social Studies this year?

7 STAAR in 5th Grade Fifth grade is a SSI year, which means the students have to pass the Reading and Math tests to go to 6th grade. Students have 3 chances to pass the tests

8 STAAR Testing Dates in 5th Grade
Math: March 28, May 8 and June 20 Reading: March 29, May 9, June 21 Science: May 10

9 Examples of Reading, Math and Science STAAR questions are hanging on posters in the hallway.
Also, browse through the end of the year text leveled books in your child’s classroom. Having end of year books with appropriate DRAs on desks in various genres be available for parents to view. Also, have Math problems that you would expect students in your grade level be able to solve by end of the year.

10 Homework Routine Students will be copying their homework assignment in their planners daily. Homework should be brought home in the homework folder daily, except for Friday. Read with your student at least minutes each night iStation from home (provide parents a copy of the home login) Prodigy- similar to Big Braqinz- will be available soon for home use.

YMCA/Daycare Front Walker - West side of school Back Walker - Echo Pines Back Car- Dismisses from back pavilion- ONLY WITH SIBLINGS IN K-2. Front Car- front of school. Only for grades 3-5. Clarifying Dismissal How does your child get home?

Growth Mindset...things to say I’m so proud of your hard work. Good job, your were successful because of your effort! I’m proud of how much you have improved. I know it is difficult but if you work hard enough you will get it. Fixed Mindset...things to avoid You’re so smart! Reading/math has always been difficult for you, it’s not your best subject. Some people are good at reading for others it’s a struggle. Nice try, but you still didn’t get a passing score.
