1 Section 8.2 Zero and Negative Exponents
Objectives: Evaluate powers that have zero and negative exponents Graph exponential functions

2 Complete the table. Make a conjecture about how the value of an exponential expression (an expression containing an exponent) changes when you decrease the exponent by 1.

3 Properties of Zero and Negative Exponents
Positive exponents are a notation for repeated multiplication Negative exponents are a notation for repeated division Negative exponents are used to indicate the reciprocal power of a positive exponent. Properties of Zero and Negative Exponents Zero as an Exponent: For every nonzero number Negative Exponent: For every nonzero number and integer

4 EX: Evaluate the exponential expression.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

5 EX: Rewrite with positive exponents. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

6 To graph the exponential function, make a table using integer values for x and plot the corresponding points and connect with a smooth curve. X -2 -1 1 2

7 Real-life problem Census figures showed that a town’s population can be modeled by , where t = 0 represents the year a) Estimate the population in the year b) Estimate the population in the year 2010

8 8.2 p – 44 evens, 58 – 60 all, 64, 72 – 81x3 24 questions
