3 Classification Antidepressant
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Schedule IV drug Currently accepted medical use in treatment in the U.S Low potential for abuse

4 History of Prozac 1970s – Eli Lilly and Co.
Organic Chemists were working on finding new compounds that showed activity at serotonin receptor sites. Came across (fluoxetine) Continued in 1980s Zimelidine (serotonin uptake blocker) was tested in rats and found that it helped with the addiction of morphine and alcohol. Found that drugs that increase concentrations of brain serotonin cause animals/humans to drink less alcohol and resulted in weight loss. Already had the name Prozac picked out. Became secret investigation when Prozac was classified as an antidepressant instead. Approved by the FDA in 1987

5 Production Prozac is made from almost entirely from fluoride.
Fluoride is the main ingredient in rat and cockroach poisons, anesthetic ,hypnotic and psychiatric drugs, and military nerve gas. Synthetic drug One of the most prescribed drugs in U.S Leading antidepressant

6 Common Abusers Taken Orally (pill form) Prescription is needed
Available in 10mg, 20mg and 40mg doses Found in tablets/capsules When abused, some cases result in amphetamine like effects, and increases energy Abuse Drug by: Overdose Mix with alcohol

7 Affects Insomnia Irritability Nervousness and anxiety
Violent thoughts and actions Agitation Suicidal thoughts or suicide Tremors Hostility Sweating Irregular heartbeat Aggression Criminal behavior Confusion and incoherent thoughts Paranoia Hallucinations Psychosis Akathisia (a painful inner agitation; inability to sit still)

-obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) -Bulimia Nervosa -Panic Disorder Prozac is a fluoxetine that affects neurotransmitters An imbalance in neurotransmitters is the cause of depression

9 Risks Long term use leads to dependence. LD50= 284mg/kg in mice
User goes through withdrawal if they miss a dose or stop taking the drug completely. Withdrawal symptoms include Dizziness Nausea Headaches Vomiting Irritability Nightmares

10 Detection While on Prozac, a blood test can be taken to measure serotonin levels. Used to see if it causes an increase/decrease in serotonin. Brain biopsy is more accurate. Prozac stays in the body for a long time. Test positive for up to 3 months

11 Consequences Prozac is a prescription only drug.
