1 BALTIC COMMUNITIES - CULTURAL MAPPING
FOUR METHODS WE HAVE DECIDED TO WORK WITH. THE SWOT WIL BE COMPLETE BY MAY 2017. THE OTHER COMPLETE BY AUGUST 2017. THE RESULTS WIL BE PRESENTTD AT A SEMINAR IN AUGUST 2017. 1) SWOT WORKSHOPS A first step to identify clear issues, potential, characteristics. (2) COMMUNITY NETWORK Informal and formal networks, location of resources, key persons and roles, participation and networks, (3) VISUAL IDENTITY Photo mapping of the community (4) COMMUNITY MAPS An open community “mapping” space which has a series of creative exercises Various groups can be invited to take part over 3-5 day period (5) 100% (just to inspire) An artistic / anthropological /qualitative narrative project with one hundred selected resideNts who are interviewed in depth and identify places in the community. A literary and visual narrative to generate debate and interest.

2 1. SWOT WORKSHOPS AN IDEAL STARTING POINT FOR ANY CULTURAL MAPPING
CAN BE BASED ON ONE SWOT FOR AN AREA WITH ONE GROUP (min. 24-max 60 persons) over a period of 4 hours OR WITH SEVERAL GROUPS (e.g. youngsters, elderly and working/active population) OR CAN BE BASED ON SWOTS FOR DIFFERENT THEMES community life/identity/spirit / celebrations the physical character of the community / spatial / infrastructure / nature cultural resources/ culture institutions/creative capacity/ education/voluntary groups cultural heritage / in all forms

3 Participants should include:
“representatives / political” (neighbourhood councils, residents ass./councilors, ethnic associations, environment asociations, volunteer associations, elderly assoc.) “management” (cultural institutions, school /college manegement, theatre directors, social service dir.) “interpretors” (journalists, artists, photographers, local historians, architects) “activists” (young people, active individuals, cultural projects / festivals, creative companies, social entrepreneurs)

4 A managed process with one/two facilitators
A managed process with one/two facilitators. One external and one internal and with min. 4-8 people to record at group sessions. Important that the people involved have a good knowledge base and “represent” relevant communities / sectors to ensure a high level of valid input. A dynamic process with four sections: STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES, THREATS. 45 mins each minimum. Each session starts with individual reflection, group reflection and then common reflection. Min. 4 and maximum 8 tables, each table looks at particular aspects. People select their “focus” at the start of the workshop. Each person requires a facilitator / recorder.

5 Process of 3 hours minimum
From individual to collective analysis Sub themes decided before e.g. if there are particular / key issues or target groups. Work in groups of min. 4 max 8 so themes are possible. Documentation essential General themes /basis themes could be: Landscape/urbanscape/environment Heritage and identity Social life/cohesion/intercultural/ Cultural life and creativity and innovation Additional focus themes might be (5) Young people /youth (6) Intercultural
