RECRUITMENT Introduction THE HOLY GRAIL March 2017
1
The poisoned chalice? Thanks for the title Graham – no pressure!
More like a poisoned chalice? Sometime recruitment can feel like that!

What is Recruitment? re¦cruit|ment [rɪˈkruːtm(ə)nt] NOUN 1. the action of enlisting new people the action of finding new people to join an organization or support a cause 2. ecology the increase in a natural population as progeny grow and new members arrive 3. physiology the incorporation of cells from elsewhere in the body into a tissue or region synonyms: induction · introduction · admission · admittance · installation · incorporation · ordination · investiture · investment · enlistment · enrolment · recruitment · baptism antonyms: expulsion So what is recruitment? What does the dictionary say? This is the bit we are interested in. What springs to mind when we say we need to recruit ringers? What do you think you need to do? Let’s revisit those thoughts later…
3
What does Recruitment Look Like in the Workplace?
The process of finding and hiring the best-qualified candidate (from within or outside of an organisation) for a job opening, in a timely and cost effective manner. The recruitment process includes analysing the requirements of a job, attracting employees to that job, screening and selecting applicants, hiring, and integrating the new employee to the organisation. Is this any different to recruiting volunteers? Why? Could it be the same?
4
What stops us? So, what stops us? What gets in the way of us having a steady flow of new recruits? There’s often a brick wall in the way, so let’s build one! Rectangular (brick-shaped) sticky notes & pens given out. Thoughts on a sticky note & stuck to the wall to build a brick wall (5mins). Let’s see if we can pull the brick wall down later. A helper can sort through the sticky notes whilst the presentation continues (duplications stuck on top of each other)

Proactive vs Reactive Recruitment
Reacting to a problem after it arises. REACTIVE PROACTIVE Preventing problems before they arise. Ask the audience what they think the differences are. What are the pros & cons of each method? Which is harder work? Which is better? Why? Are they both useful in certain scenarios? E.g. recruiting for a brand new band for a tower with no ringers. What’s your default method? Is this because the proactive recruitment isn’t happening?
6
Recruitment Can be Easy!
Recruitment doesn’t have to be about re-inventing the wheel or holding a tower open day. The easiest way to recruit is to raise awareness about ringing and your tower. If potential ringers can find you and make the decision to learn to ring by their own self- interest and motivation, they are probably more likely to commit long-term. There may be some initial hard work to get things going, like making posters, etc., but you will reap the benefits long term.
7
When did you become a ringer? How did you become a ringer?
Why Recruit? With around 25,000 ringers and an average age of X, we need to recruit new ringers to keep the tradition alive. Let’s look at how you got into ringing & see if the default of reactive recruitment is how you got into ringing… When did you become a ringer? How did you become a ringer? What made you keep coming back? Time for a poll… Helper to flipchart answers to the questions. Ask the first question in blocks of 10 years & a show of hands. Aske the 2nd question with a range of answers & a shao of hands. E.g. though a friend, through a family member, through church, Facebook, internet, etc. Ask the 3rd question with a range of answers & a show of hands. E.g. social, something to do, friends, enjoyed it, etc. Likelihood findings is that most ringers started ringing because they knew someone who was a ringer… Is most of this through traditional methods or more modern methods? Do we need to move this on with the times?

Easy Ways to Recruit Church Noticeboard Church Magazine Church Notices
Websites Social Media Weddings Flyers Displays Posters Contact Details Open Ringing Bring a Friend Talk through the examples using the Easy Ways to Recruit document available on the ART website under the recruitment section. Give out the print out for reference. Advise where the section is & what else is available. Remember to stress how many referrals we are getting regularly via the website. These ringers are getting an advantage as they are getting qualified, DBS checked teachers! Just remember that you must deal with these requests & follow them up. Any others ideas? Think back to the wall & recruitment in the workplace, does the only person actively recruiting need to be the Tower Captain?
9
And if you all work together…
Within your tower, area, guild, how much easier could it be? As per the last slide, does the only person recruiting need to be you??? Delegate, word of mouth is very powerful!
10
Any Blue Sky Ideas? Are there any other blue sky ideas to share? Particularly easy ones, even if you need to get one of your younger ringers to help? A local college, school or University student may embrace a project and it will be free!!!
11
Remember… No matter which recruitment method you use, you must have a compelling message. You need to explain why ringing is worthy of that person's time. Make your message short, simple, and direct, communicating the need for their service and the good he/she can do Stress the needs of the community for the service, but also point out the benefits the ringer will receive. These include doing good, but there may be skills, exercise and valuable experience that they will gain Finally, be sure to ask people to learn to ring. The most effective way to do this is to have your ringers or ask their friends and acquaintances to join them. Be sure to provide them with the information they need to make an effective "ask." Have confidence! Have courage in your convictions!
12
Action Planning… Hand out the action planning sheets. These are also available on Smart Ringer under the recruitment section. Ask yourself the open questions & try to come up with what you think is right for your tower. After that complete the short term, medium term & long term action plan goals sheet.

What stopped us?!? So, what stops us? What gets in the way of us having a steady flow of new recruits? There’s often a brick wall in the way, so let’s build one! Rectangular (brick-shaped) sticky notes & pens given out. Thoughts on a sticky note & stuck to the wall to build a brick wall (5mins). Let’s see if we can pull the brick wall down later. A helper can sort through the sticky notes whilst the presentation continues (duplications stuck on top of each other)
14
Can we challenge ourselves to stop, start or continue doing something to spread the word & ensure a steady flow of new recruits? Remember you don’t need to reinvent the wheel or doing everything yourself. Complete your postcard & we will send it to you in 6months time to remind you what you promised yourself.
15
If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.
Remember!
