I am very excited to work with you and hopefully helping you to get comfortable and integrate some of these apps into your classroom. Today we will be touching on what book creator is, go in depth on how to use this app, cover all the features, , as well as have time to use the tools. I will also be providing you with resources and links to further your knowledge or for later review.

As I go through this app, I want you to think of ideas on what supports your own students may use and how you may integrate this into your classroom. We will share ideas towards the end

So, what is book creator? Simply put it is a digital book, or an e-book.
Book Creator is open-ended, and can be used in any subject area. It makes the most of the iPad as a multimedia tool, and presents teachers and students with a blank canvas to create.
Book Creator is a great tool to support inclusion as it can benefit students who need a very simple and intuitive, yet powerful tool for creating digital books and those who may need to use the writing supports built into the iPad or express their learning verbally.

Some features of book creator include customizing the background color of your page, being able to add text, and then being able to customize the font, color, background. You can also add photos and images, using your photo library, your camera or ones from the web. Many students love the camera feature, and are able to create books about themselves, their family, a field trip, or pictures from an experiment.

Use the pen tool to draw and annotate your book
Choose from portrait, landscape or square book sizes
You can also add video, add soundtracks, and also record your voice. This I have seen a lot of ELL students do, or students who have trouble with writing or spelling, or students who want to explain a presentation, but have it pre-recorded. One school even used their finished books to be used as interactive descriptions to explain their project at a science fair. Being able to add video to the page is a great feature. Students can add videos of them demonstrating a presentation, doing an experiment, teaching a tutorial, and the list goes on and on.
You can use the pen feature to draw, write or annotate, and also be able to choose the layout of your books. There are also some shapes like arrows which students have used to label or to make timelines. Thinking and talking bubbles are also there for use as well. I’ve seen these used for making stories and comics, or how students can show their own thinking when doing a lesson on inferences or when creating comics. There are so many possibilities.

There are other ways to export your book, but these are what I found teachers to use mostly in their classroom. Depending on if there are videos, or sound, you may choose ibooks over a pdf.

11. Essentials Create a new book Add pages Save/export your book
These steps are the essentials everyone would need to know. These include creating a new book, adding pages, and exporting your book. On the free version, you can only create one book at a time. So to create a new book, you would need to first save your book, and then clear the contents of that book.

Based on your students’ needs and supports, you may choose to have them express their learning using only voice notes, or text, or visuals. But these features are all available.
I will demonstrate how to create a book very quickly, and you will have time to create your own at the end

After launching the App, you can tap the “New book” button at the top left of the screen. Or there is also a plus sign at the bottom of your screen. With the free version, you can only create one book at a time. So you will need to export the completed book, and then delete whatever you added to the book.

14. Choose a shape for your book
You will then choose the shape of your book from the 3 available options, portrait, square or landscape. This decides which shape an individual page will be. One thing to note is that you cannot change the shape of your book once you have chosen in the free version. You would have to uninstall and reinstall the app if you really want a different page shape.

15. Customize your front cover
Let's start by choosing a nice bright color for the background of the page. The inspector button is going to be your go-to on customizing pages. Tap the 'Inspector' button in the top right of the screen to choose a color for your background.

OK, we're ready to give our book a title. Tap the + icon and choose 'Add Text'. Type your text into the window and press Done when finished. 
If you need to change or add to the text, just touch the text and it will bring the editing window and keyboard up again.
If you make a mistake, you can always tap the Undo button in the top menu.

Press the 'Inspector' button to access the style menu. You can adjust the size, colour, and style of the text to your heart's content.

Tap the + icon. You can either choose Camera and take a photo there and then, or you can choose a photo already saved on your iPad photo library.
Find the photo you want to use and select it to make it appear in your book. You can then resize it if you wish.

Adding a new page is a simple matter of tapping the large + button on the right of the screen, or you can use the Pages button in the top menu.
Note that your first 2 pages are already added for you, so from the cover page, tap the > button to start adding text and images to the rest of your book.

Here are some other ways you can incorporate Book Creator into your classroom.
Digital Story Telling is where you can create interactive books that can be published in iBooks.
Learning Journals to document new learning using visuals, drawings, photos, and voice.
Vocabulary study with sound support.
Class wide collaborative books: each student does one page each for a book. (Which was similar idea to the example I showed you)
Think-a-louds using the voice recording feature.
Explain your thinking using the voice recording feature, thinking and talking bubbles in the shape section.
Create social stories to model behavior.
Write, illustrate, and read a poem.

If you do have your own device, try some of these. Start by creating a new book and choose a layout. Remember, in the free version, once you choose a layout, you cannot change this unless you reinstall the app.
