It’s very important that the Homework Planner is kept in your child’s Take Home folder, so (s)he can record assignments at school and you can check that they are completed after school. Please initial each day after the work in completed. Cursive is preferred. Later we will add a poem with the weekly pattern that students will practice reading aloud for fluency and expression. Daily reading is key to your child’s growth in reading. Beginning in October, students will not only keep track of their reading at home, they will also write a response about one of the books they read. Homework planners (with parent initials) are due on Friday. Look for a new planner and reading log each Monday.

The pattern for the week will be introduced in class; for example CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) with the short i sound. At home students will brainstorm words (with help is fine) then select 10 to work with. The words need to be spelled correctly. Please encourage your child to go beyond the basic if they are able when brainstorming words. Only one part of the word has to follow the pattern. Brainstorming words together provides an opportunity to be creative, discuss new words, and practice using the dictionary! Students write their 10 words in alphabetical order making sure to spell them correctly. Students are encouraged to recognize patterns in words, how to read words and “chunks”, and build vocabulary. A weekly test of a finite set of words will no longer be given, however a mastery of the patterns is expected to be exhibited in student work.

Rocket Math – Fact Fluency Practice
In class students practice the top half orally with a partner. Students that do not make their goal take the paper home and complete the top half and any problems not completed on the bottom half for homework. Students are given one minute to correctly complete problems on the bottom half. They must reach or go past their predetermined goal. Students that meet their goal move on to the next level on the following day. After 5 attempts at the same level students will receive an extra sheet to take home and complete. Occasionally a student’s goal may be reduced or a student may be moved back a fact level for additional work on unmastered facts. Students will mark on their Homework Planner if they have Rocket Math homework or not.
