Presentation on theme: "What’s the matter with matter?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What’s the matter with matter?
Grade 5 Science Standards 1b, 1e

2 What is matter? -Matter is anything that has volume and mass. What is mass? The amount of ‘stuff’ inside matter. What is volume? The space that matter occupies. It can be equal to length x width x volume.

3 Let’s talk about mass… Which has more mass, a brick or a pillow?
Which has more ‘stuff’ in it? A triple beam balance is used to measure mass.

4 Let’s talk about volume…
This cute puppy is small! It does not take up a lot of space… This balloon is huge! It takes up a lot of space! Volume is the “size” of space the object takes up!

5 Matter has mass…. Occupies space….
All of these are examples of matter… Why? Milk Football Water drops Flower

6 Which of these are examples of matter?
Check Point! Which of these are examples of matter? Air Coffee Pencil Heat Lightning Paper Sound Heat, Lightning, and Sound are forms of energy, not matter! No mass and no volume…

7 All of matter are made up of tiny particles called atoms…
-Atoms are of different kinds. -No one has seen an atom but because of the way matter ‘behaves,’ scientists know that atoms exist. -Examples of atoms are Hydrogen (H), Nitrogen (N), Oxygen (O), and Carbon (C). -These atoms differ in mass and size. Ink diffuses in water because it consists of tiny particles that move!

8 When atoms combine, molecules are formed
When atoms combine, molecules are formed. These combinations happen during a chemical reaction. Oxygen Atom Water Molecule (H2O)

9 Examples of Molecules….
Oxygen (O2) is the gas we all breathe. It consists of two Oxygen atoms bonded together. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the gas plants use to make food. It consists of two Oxygen atoms bonded to a Carbon atom. Methane (CH4) is a gas we use as fuel. It consists of four Hydrogen atoms bonded to a Carbon atom.

10 Molecules come in different shapes and sizes!
Salt (NaCl) occurs as a crystal. Its particles are organized into well-arranged patterns. Starch is made up of long molecules with thousands of C, H, and O atoms linked together!

11 Summary 1) Matter is all around us, it is anything that has mass and occupies space. 2) Mass is the stuff making up matter, volume is the space that matter occupies. 3) All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms. 4) Atoms can combine to form molecules. Examples are water (H2O), salt (NaCl), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2). 5) Scientists have used such technology as ‘electron microscopy’ to look at atoms and molecules. 6) Molecules come in all shapes and sizes. Some are crystalline.
