1 Types of Graphics Technological Design

2 Graphic Design Definition
Visual problem solving that utilizes shapes, images, text, color, etc. to communicate an idea or ideas for a specific purpose to a specific target audience.

3 What Graphic Designers do?
Brochures Posters Magazine covers Magazine layouts Tickets Business cards T-shirts Signs Logos Book layouts Advertisements Websites CD and DVD covers DVD interactivity elements Internet banners Flash animations Web interfaces PowerPoint Presentations

4 Two Main Types of Graphics
Bitmap Vector

5 Vector Images Vector images are made up of many individual, scalable objects. These objects are defined by mathematical equations rather than painted pixels. Objects cab be lines, shapes, and\ or text with properties the designer can alter such as color, outline, effects. Etc.

6 Vector Facts Vector-based images are resolution (size) independent.
You can increase and decrease the size of vector images to any degree and your lines will remain crisp and sharp, both on screen and in print. They do not pixelate or get blurry when you change the size!

7 Vectors - Resolution Independent

8 Vector Facts Common vector file formats include:
AI (Adobe Illustrator) CDR (CorelDraw) Popular vector drawing programs include: Adobe Illustrator CorelDraw AutoCAD

9 Bitmap Images Bitmap images (also known as raster images) are made up of pixels in a grid. Pixels are tiny dots of individual color that make up what you see on your screen. Bitmaps are painted pixels! All these tiny dots of color come together to form the images you see.

10 Bitmap Facts Bitmap images are resolution (size) dependent.
Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image and is usually stated as dpi (dots per inch) or ppi (pixels per inch). Because bitmaps are resolution dependent, it's difficult to increase or decrease their size without sacrificing a degree of image quality. They pixelate or get blurry when you attempt to change the size!

11 Bitmaps - Resolution Dependent

12 Bitmap Facts Common bitmap file formats include: BMP GIF JPEG\ JPG PNG
TIFF Popular bitmap editing programs include: Microsoft Paint Adobe Photoshop Corel Photo-Paint
