Module 3 Radiation Safety Program

2 LSU Radiation Safety Program
The LSU radiation safety program will be conducted in such a manner so that exposure to faculty, staff, students, the public, and the environment will be maintained as low as reasonably achievable and that no radiation exposure will be received without societal benefit. This will be accomplished without impeding legitimate research, or realistic teaching objectives.

12 What is Provided? Contamination and/or other radiological surveys

13 What Is Not Covered? Maintenance fee charged by the state on x-ray machines Disposal of long lived radioactive waste

14 Who Can Order Radioactive Material?
Only Persons Who Are Approved Users

15 How To Order Radioactive Material
Through University Stores Regular Purchase Order Via Telephone Under Blanket Order

16 University Stores Complete order form and have it approved by the Radiation Safety Office.

17 Orders Purchase Order Blanket Order
Complete purchase order form and have it approved by the Radiation Safety Office Blanket Order Must have prior approval from the Radiation Safety Office when an order is placed Must notify the Radiation Safety Office when an order is placed

18 Packages All packages must be shipped to the Radiation Safety Office for three reasons: 1) to track radioactive material from receipt to disposal 2) to assign a unique log number 3) to check for contamination on the package

19 Material Disbursement
After packages have been logged in and checked, the purchaser is notified Pick up the shipment and sign for it at the Radiation Safety Office The lab must deface all radioactive labels when the material has been used and /or removed from the packaging

20 Annual In-Laboratory Training (see the Campus Radiation Safety Manual for training materials)
Every person who frequents a laboratory where radioactive material is stored or handled must have ANNUAL training covering at least the following: Rules regarding eating, drinking, storage of food and utensils Proper security for radioactive materials Procedures for discarding potentially contaminated waste

21 Laboratory Surveys The Radiation Safety Office surveys each laboratory where radioactive material is used or stored every 3 months A notice is sent when Acceptable surface activity level (100pCi/100 square cm) is exceeded

22 Laboratory Surveys In-Lab surveys must be conduct every time 0.5 mCi of a radioactive material is handled by a worker in the lab The results of In-Lab surveys must be kept and documented in the labs copy of the Radiation Safety Manual in the appropriate section

23 Laboratory Audits All locations where radioactive material is used or stored is audited on 6 month frequency Inventory logs must be up-to-date In laboratory surveys must be recorded Instruments must be calibrated and operating properly Warning and emergency signs must be posted In-laboratory training must be up-to-date

24 Responsibilities All individual users, technicians, students, and operating personnel are responsible for assuring: University personnel, students, and visitors are not subject to undue radiation exposure all federal and state regulations have been met all University regulations and policies pertaining to radiation safety have full compliance special project restrictions have full compliance University insurance restrictions are met

25 Responsibilities (cont.)
All individual users, technicians, students, and operating personnel are responsible for assuring: all local and state codes and ordinances are in full compliance the integrity and usefulness of University facilities are not compromised maximum standards of good practice and safe handling are maintained

26 Responsibilities Each person who handles radioactive
materials or irradiator sources must realize that the ultimate success of a radiation safety program lies in responsible actions by individuals in their daily work.

27 Common Violations Eating and drinking in laboratories
Leaving radiation-producing equipment and/or radioactive material unsecured Failure to follow proper waste procedures Failure to conduct and record In Laboratory surveys Failure to maintain source inventory forms Failure to wear appropriate dosimeters

28 Consequence Initial Violation Violations while on Probation
Principal investigator will be placed on probation for one year in accordance with PS-99 Violations while on Probation Principal investigator will lose privileges to use radioactive material and/or sources of radiation
