2 CURRICULUM OVERVIEW CLASS 2021 Yen-Ping Kuo, PhD April 8, 2017
ACCEPTED STUDENTS DAY Yen-Ping Kuo, PhD Assistant Dean for Curriculum Chair of Microbiology and Immunology I would start with a generic overview of the curriculum; not too specific, but enough to know we have both “stable” features but also some innovative concepts in the curriculum. As to Boards, first time pass rates on COMLEX-USA Level 1 and Level 2CE and PE were above the national mean for each of our first two classes. More importantly, the Class of 2017 ranked #11 out of 33 COMs nationwide (#11 out of 48 COMs when include branch campuses) on Level 1 discipline scores (e.g., biochemistry, microbiology, etc.). The discipline score performance is more important because a COM can have a 98% pass rate, but most of those scores could be in the low 400’s; CUSOM student performance thus far has been solid on both pass rate AND discipline performance. More than 60% of each class exceeds the national standardized mean, and nearly 20% score above 600 on COMLEX-USA Level 1. Level 2 performance is even better with 77% of our students above the national mean, and about 40% above 600. COMLEX-USA Level 2 scores were among the best in the nation, at about a 98% first time pass rate with high discipline scores (many in the 700’s and 800’s; 600 or more you can “write your own ticket” for residency). Only about 1/3 of each class has taken USMLE, but they have done very well. The two-year average on Step 1 is more than 97% first time pass rate, and a 98% pass rate of Step 2 CK. This high level of performance on licensing exams provides validation of the CUSOM curriculum, which is further confirmed by the 100% Match rate.  Medical school GPA is one of the best predictors of success on Boards, and Board scores are typically considered the top parameter to get a residency interview (since it provides “apples to apples” comparisons as an independent outcomes measures). 14 Our Commitment to Test Quality
Integrated Board-Style Quiz/Exam Item quality Style consistency Redundancy Conflicting Knowledge While an integrated pre-clinical curriculum is advantageous in fostering basic and clinical science integration, administrating integrated, board-style exams that encompass many different basic science disciplines and clinical knowledge is challenging for faculty, students, and administrators. Students comment about drastic style differences or conflicting information within a single exam, faculty are frequently frustrated with student queries questioning the clarity of items, and administrators face the challenge on the reliability of assessment outcomes.

15 TEST CONSTRUCTION PROCESS at CUSOM
Exam Draft Constructed by the Course Director(s) EQUATE revises and approves all test-items in QA sessions Med Ed Department enters items to ExamSoftTM and execute the exam
