Resiliency- The Blind Side
Football star Michael Oher was born Michael Jerome Williams Jr. on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was one of 12 children born to Michael Jerome Williams Sr. and Denise Oher, who provided their children with little to no support. Michael Sr. was frequently in prison, and Denise was addicted to crack cocaine. As a result, Michael Jr. was in and out of foster homes and frequently homeless. He also performed poorly as a student, repeating 1st and 2nd grades and he attended 11 different schools during his first nine years as a student. His estranged father was murdered while he was a senior in high school. How do you think Michael functioned day-to-day in school? What would it be like to attend 11 different schools in 9 years? At 16 years old, he was adopted by the Tuohy family and began excelling on the football field. He was offered scholarships and eventually became an NFL player. He had finally had the support to help him succeed in life but how did he survive for all those years before that? Talk about it with your class.
