Presentation on theme: "Welcome to Human Behavior and the Social Environment!"— Presentation transcript:

1 Welcome to Human Behavior and the Social Environment!
Unit 1 Seminar Instructor : Dr. Lisa D. Belfield You should start to hear music at about 15 minutes before the hour, please be sure that your audio is working. Press F11 on your computer in order to enlarge the seminar screen. If you have not already, please be sure to read over the course syllabus.

2 Seminar Ground Rules If I type or say *Break* everyone quit typing.
When asking a question, please type ?, and wait for me to call on you. There is a learning curve with this technology, so please be patient as we figure out the best methods together. I will always end seminar on time – please do not log out until I have dismissed class (you will see a slide which states that we are finished for the evening).

3 Online Learning Is Not…
A way to easily earn a degree…quite the contrary. It takes motivation and self- discipline. Self-learning.

4 Hint 1: Print Out the Syllabus
When is a project due? How are projects graded? What are the course expectations? All of this information (and a lot more) is contained in the course syllabus.

5 Hint 2: Familiarize Yourself With the Course Layout
Understanding the course layout will make your term run much more smoothly. Even if you are already familiar with the eCollege format, it does not hurt to review!

6 Your Discussion Board grade is worth 36% of the entire course grade.
Hint 3: Make Sure You Understand the Weight of the Discussion Board Grade Your Discussion Board grade is worth 36% of the entire course grade. This means that if you fail the Discussion Board portion of the course, but get 100% on EVERY other assignment, you would still only earn a maximum of 64% for the course.

7 Discussion Board Netiquette…
Let’s keep the discussion board neat and easy to read. PLEASE DO NOT SCREAM BY USING ALL CAPS. The Bottom Line… …you must make the discussion board activities a high priority.

8 Quizzes, quizzes, quizzes
There are 5 quizzes in this course. Be sure to download and complete the study guide before attending seminar so that you can ask questions about anything you do not understand or need further information about. You need to read, study and attend seminar to do well on the quizzes.

9 Hint 4: Read your instructor’s emails and the course page announcements.
Sometimes they can get a bit long, but it’s all stuff you need to know! Please be sure to read all of your s and announcements top to bottom, so you do not miss out on important information.

10 Hint 5: Read the Project Grading Tables (Rubrics)
Read the rubric for each project BEFORE you begin the project. You will then have a clear understanding of what should be included in your project.

11 Hint 6: Read Your Instructor’s Comments
I spend a great deal of time reading through your assignments and making comments. Take your time and read through everything written to you. Keep in mind that this is not an English Composition course so I will not correct every spelling and grammar issue on your paper – but I will let you know that there are mistakes.

12 Hint 7: Communicate with me!
Some students feel uncomfortable contacting me if they are falling behind. I cannot help you if I do not know you need help. This does not mean to take advantage of my flexibility – let me know of any extenuating circumstances and I will let you know your options.

13 Hint 8: Organize Your Time
Do not wait until the last minute to ask questions about your assignments. Do not wait until the last minute to post to the discussion board.

14 Hint 9: Attend Seminars Questions are answered and you have the opportunity to have course material immediately clarified. Option 2

15 Hint 10: If you are unsure, just ask
You are not a bother when you ask for assistance. That is what I am here for!
