Animals of Paleolithic Art project part 1 research
Natural history- what did they eat, where were they? Behavior? Reproduction? Status- extinct? How? Related contemporary species if extinct. Art work depicting your animal – describe, what colors were generally used, what caves were they located, realistic? Accurate? Herbivore? Prey? Take notes on each Meet in groups on Monday I will be sending out a power point with images of your animals

Animals of Paleolithic Art project part 2 : cave drawing panel
Review the power point images of your animal, familiarize yourself with the animal and how it was depicted in the cave art. Each group will create a panel of drawings of your chosen animal in the style of the Paleolithic artists Bring your drawing materials next Weds. We will begin the project then. We will present both the research information and the art panel to the class on Weds. Oct . 11th.

Styles of cave paintings
Contour line Draw a simple contour line drawing showing suggestions of texture and markings but without value or shading. Suggestions of form, texture and value (shading) Using solid or varied color and strokes of the charcoal / paint to show tone, value and texture

Direct observation and memory sketch exercise
Take your art materials out and turn to the first page. We will view six images of the common animals depicted in the cave art . We will view each for a limited amount of time Then you will attempt to draw them from memory any characteristic that you can remember.

Paleolithic animal groups
Meet in your animal groups Discuss: who will research what divide the research information amongst yourselves. how will you draw your animals – from pictures of animals, from pictures of the cave drawings or come up with your own image. Over the weekend , view as many images of the animals as possible- print some out to draw from or download them onto your iphone etc. There is no need to research over the weekend , we will have time next week in class.

Discussion guidelines
Decide how the panel will be organized Decide how you will make sure everyone has room on the panel. (use light pencil lines etc.) How your group will show the diversity of techniques and styles that were used . Everyone should do a different version of the animal. Decide what 3 members will draw first and who will go to the SRC first.

materials 4’ x 6’ brown paper will be taped to the white boards
Each group should have: charcoal, chalk pencils surgical gloves and wipes. Be sure to wipe your hands before leaving the drawing area. Keep the class room free of handprints etc.
