Nothing special, just a big dinner with family or friends.
What do we eat? Italian Belgian There are the unmissable lentils with the cotecchino (a large spiced sausage) that symbolize money and good luck for the coming year and we eat a lot of fish like: salmon, baccalà, vongole,cozze,capitone or gamberetti Nothing special, just a big dinner with family or friends.

extra In Belgium the king has a new year speech to wish everyone luck and of course a happy new year. In Italy also our president has a speech to wish good luck for the coming year.

A lot of champagne, but any kind of alcohol is okay!
What do we drink? italian belgian Sparkling wine, red and white wine, champagne and sometimes we drink limoncello. A lot of champagne, but any kind of alcohol is okay!

fireworks Italian Belgian Even if it’s not the right thing to do we all can buy fireworks and light them in the street but away from the centre of the city We can’t fire fireworks unless you have a license. If you want to see the fireworks you need to go to the centre of your town.

We just wear normal clothes, nothing special.
What do we wear? Italian Belgian We wear red underwear to bring good luck for the coming year and someone has to give it as a gift We just wear normal clothes, nothing special.

New year’s letter All the children read a letter to their parents, grandparents or godparents to wish them luck for the new year.

The countdown At the stroke of midnight we wish each other happy new year , hug and drink a glass of champagne.
