Induction – 2014/2015

2 Absence If you cannot come to your class for any reason, please let us know by calling the centre where the class is held. The staff there will pass the message on to your teacher. Do you know the number to ring if you can’t come to class?

3 Accidents Please tell the centre office if you have an accident.
They will note it in the Accident Book. This information helps us prevent further accidents.

4 Additional Learning Support
If you have a learning difficulty and/or a disability, you may be able to get additional learning support. This includes: transport, helpers, signers, note-takers, dyslexia and language support and additional help with English and Maths. Talk to your teacher if you feel you would benefit from extra support.

5 Assessment and appeals
The Learner Assessment Appeals Policy explains how your work is assessed. If you think your assessment is unfair, then you can make an appeal. You can get a copy of the Learner Assessment Appeals Policy from your teacher or the centre office.

6 Attendance For you and the other people on your course, you must arrive on time and attend all your classes. Please let your teacher know if you are going to be late or can’t attend a class. Your teacher can talk to you about ways we may be able to help. If your attendance falls below 80% and you don’t keep your teacher informed, you may lose your place. Do you know how many of your course sessions is equal to 80%?

7 Buses We have a helpful leaflet from
Transport for Greater Manchester with details of the buses that go to our centres. Ask for a copy at the centre office.

8 Car Parking Parking is limited at some sites, so arrive in good time if you want to be sure of a space. How do you travel to your class?

9 Your Centre Your teacher will now give you information about your centre: Where toilets and other facilities are Who’s who – who to talk to about different issues Fire exits and fire procedures Have you got all the information you need about your centre?

10 Your Course Your teacher will now give you information about your course: Timetable (rooms, teachers, tutorials) What you’ll be learning on the course Exams and course work Progression routes Have you got all the information you need about your course?

11 Complaints, concerns and compliments
We want to hear your views about us, so we can improve. Please speak to your teacher or the centre office staff if you want to complain or show concern about something. We also want to know if you’re happy about something we have done so we can make sure we keep doing it.

12 Computer and Internet Use
We provide access to computers for you to use as part of your course. Some centres have PCs you can use outside class times, and you can use PCs in libraries to support your learning. You must follow the guidelines in our Internet Code of Practice. This includes knowing how to keep yourself and your computer safe from threats and viruses (e-safety). Your teacher will give you more information. If you do not follow the code of practice, you may have to leave the course. Be very careful about giving personal details on line Do you have any other tips for using computers safety? Take regular breaks to protect your eyes and back when using computers

13 Courses You may have only chosen one course so far, but we have lots of courses that might suit you. Please check our leaflets on each area for course listings, or visit our website. Ask at the centre office for more info or make an appointment with someone from our Learner Services team for a discussion. Are you doing any other courses?

14 Disabled Learners Manchester Adult Education supports all disabled learners to succeed with their chosen course. If you would like a confidential interview to tell us about a disability and/or discuss additional support needs, please ask at the centre office, make an appointment with one of our Learner Services team, or talk to your teacher.

15 Equal Opportunities All learners and staff should expect to receive fair, equal and supportive treatment according to their needs. We do not accept discrimination on any grounds.

16 Examinations If you are taking an exam course, your teacher will tell you about the dates of the exams and how to enter. There is an exam fee for some exams. Will you be taking exams? Do you know if there is a fee?

17 Fire Procedures Your teacher will now tell you about the centre’s safety procedures and fire exits. Your centre will hold regular fire drills for your safety. Please make sure you know the procedure to follow. Do you know what to do if there’s a fire in your centre?

18 First Aid Anyone who needs first aid should go to the centre office.
If necessary, we will arrange to take you to hospital and try to contact your next of kin. We must fill in the Accident Book whether there is an apparent injury or not.

19 Flexible Learning If you miss a class for some reason, e.g. shift work, caring responsibilities or ill health, we can give you work to do at home so that you don’t fall behind. If possible, tell your teacher in advance if you have to miss any classes, or ring the centre to leave a message.

20 Help with Costs Our Learner Support Fund may help you with travel costs, childcare costs or course fees. Please ask at the centre office for more information and make an appointment to see a member of our Learner Services team.

21 Helping the Environment
Manchester is aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40% by 2020. Manchester Adult Education is part of the Green City Programme, which aims to make Manchester a greener, cleaner, healthier, wealthier and greater city. Activities on your course will show you how you can help with this. 22 Information, Advice and Guidance
Impartial information, advice and guidance about learning and work is available at all our centres. We will help you to develop an Action Plan and prepare for looking for work. In your interview you can discuss: Careers Courses at Manchester Adult Education and other colleges Higher education courses CV writing Job search skills. Please ask at the centre office for an appointment. Do you know what you want to do after this course?

23 Keep in Touch We want to keep in touch with you after you finish your course and welcome any news on how you are doing, such as getting a job or going into higher education. We will ask you about this if you come to collect a certificate, or you can contact your teacher and let them know. We need to have your up-to-date contact details so we can contact you occasionally by , phone or social media to find out what you have done since you left. You can also put a message on one of our Facebook pages and share your news with others. Do you use Facebook? Have you liked our page?

24 Learner Comments We really value your opinions and will use them to improve our service for you. This is your chance to have a say in the way things are done. You may be asked to fill in an online survey or take part in a discussion group.

25 Learner Contract You have already signed the Learner Charter on the back of the enrolment form. Please have a look at what it says and keep it safe. Do you know what it says on the Learner Contract?

26 Lost Property Please hand in any lost property you find and tell us where and when you found it. If you have lost something, please ask at the centre office.

27 MAES Online (Moodle) We provide online learning resources for many areas of learning. These resources are available at any time of the day from any computer connected to the internet. The website is full of useful information about Manchester Adult Education, including course dates, times etc. Visit the website at manchester.gov.uk/adulted

29 Mobile Phones Please switch off your mobile phone in class.
Your teacher may allow you to leave your phone on if you have a special reason. You must check with your teacher first.

30 Notice boards To make sure all our learners are aware of all the opportunities that may be available in their local area we have information notice boards in all our centres. These notice boards display lots of information about local job vacancies, other training and skills courses that may be offered locally, as well as community events and activities. Do you know where the notice boards are in your centre?

31 Progression Your teacher will talk to you about your long-term plans all through the course and discuss with you the best route for you to reach your goal. Talk to your teacher if you have any questions or need any help with progression so we can make sure you receive the best advice possible and have the best chance of getting a place on the course you want to do next. You can also make an appointment to see someone from our Learner Services team to discuss your options.

32 Refreshments Most of our centres have drink machines and special areas for eating and drinking. You cannot eat or drink in classrooms for health and safety and hygiene reasons. Do you know where you can get refreshments?

33 Respect Learners and staff are expected to show respect for each other. Abuse will not be tolerated and may result in learners being excluded from their course.

34 Safeguarding Manchester Adult Education is committed to ensure that learners and staff have a safe and healthy place of work and learning environment. However, you are also responsible for your own safety and for preventing injury to others. Please report any concerns to a member of staff. Do you know what to do if you have a safety concern?

35 School holidays Some courses will continue during school holidays. If you cannot come due to childcare, you can be given the option of completing work at home, or you may be helped to pay for childcare for school- age children. Speak to your teacher or make an appointment before the holidays with someone from our Learner Services team.

36 Smoking You cannot smoke in any of our centres or entrance areas. This includes electronic cigarettes.

37 Student discount card As a Manchester Adult Education learner you can get an ‘NUS Extra’ Student Card, which for just £12 will give you access to great student savings on clothing, travel, entertainment, food and technology. 38 Study Week During your course you may have a study week. This means that you don’t come to class but your teacher will give you work to do. Study week is part of your course and it is important that you do the work set for you.

39 Withdrawal from a course
If you feel you cannot continue with your studies for any reason, please talk to your teacher or one of our Information, Advice and Guidance workers to see if we can help or offer any advice and support to help you continue. It is important that you let your teacher or admin office know as soon as possible if you intend to leave your course, as we may be able to offer your place to another person on the waiting list.
