2 Prelude for Worship Martha Short

3 Victory in Jesus

4 How a Savior came from Glory How He gave His life on Calvary
I heard an old old story How a Savior came from Glory How He gave His life on Calvary To save a wretch like me

5 I heard about His groaning Of His precious blood’s atoning
Then I repented of my sin And won the victory

6 He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood
O victory in Jesus My Savior forever He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood

7 He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory Beneath the cleansing flood

8 I heard about His healing Of His cleansing power revealing
How He made the lame To walk again And caused the blind to see

9 And then I cried “Dear Jesus Come and heal my broken spirit”
And somehow Jesus Came and brought To me the victory

10 He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood
O victory in Jesus My Savior forever He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood

11 He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory Beneath the cleansing flood

12 He has built for me in glory

18 Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)

19 Amazing Grace How sweet the sound That saved A wretch like me I once was lost But now am found Was blind but now I see

20 T’was Grace that taught The hour I first believed
My heart to fear And Grace My fears relieved How precious did That Grace appear The hour I first believed

21 My chains are gone I've been set free My God my Savior
Has ransomed me And like a flood His mercy rains Unending love Amazing grace

22 His word my hope secures
The Lord has promised Good to me His word my hope secures He will my shield And portion be As long as life endures

23 The earth shall soon Dissolve like snow The sun forbear to shine But God Who called
Me here below Will be forever mine Will be forever mine You are forever mine

24 In Christ Alone

25 In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light my strength my song
This cornerstone this solid ground Firm through the fiercest Drought and storm

26 What heights of love What depths of peace
When fears are stilled When strivings cease My comforter my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand

27 In Christ alone Who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save

28 ‘Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live

29 There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again

30 And as He stands in victory Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious Blood of Christ

31 On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand

32 No guilt in life no fear in death This is the pow’r of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny

33 No pow’r of hell no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘Til He returns or calls me home Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand

34 Offerings (Scripture Reading)

35 My God

36 Came to bring us home again.
My God, full of mercy, Heard our weeping, Came to bring us home again. My God takes the broken And makes them whole.

37 My God touched the outcast, And He caused the blind to see.
Raised the lame man, And He caused the blind to see. My God takes the broken And makes them whole.

38 My God stood for justice, But He called the sinner ‘friend’.
Shamed the prideful, But He called the sinner ‘friend’. My God takes the broken And makes them whole.

39 Made his child to live again.
My God felt the anguish Of the soldier, Made his child to live again. My God takes the broken And makes them whole.

40 My God, mocked and beaten, Yet crying ‘Father God, forgive.’
Crushed and bleeding, Yet crying ‘Father God, forgive.’ My God became broken To make them whole.

41 Broke the shackles of the grave.
My God, on the third day, In the morning Broke the shackles of the grave. My God takes the broken And makes them whole.

42 My God knows my failures, Gives me strength to try again.
Speaks forgiveness, Gives me strength to try again. My God takes the broken And makes them whole.

43 Matthew 20:20–28 (NASB) Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.”

44 Matthew 20:20–28 (NASB) 22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to Him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father.”

45 Matthew 20:20–28 (NASB) 24 And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 26 It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,

46 Matthew 20:20–28 (NASB) 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

50 Greatness in the Kingdom
Consider the irony. Their King has just said he must die, and all the disciples can think about is where they will rank in the Kingdom.

51 Greatness in the Kingdom
God’s Word is clear. We are called to service in His church.

52 Greatness in the Kingdom
• As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. (1 Pet 4:10) • Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Gal 5:13) • Outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10)

53 Sermon in a Sentence CTS: To embrace service as the way of life, 1) we must accept our King’s way of assessing our value (25–26a), 2) we must desire spiritual greatness (26b–27), and 3) we must see Jesus as the model for our service (28).

54 Greatness in the Kingdom
1. We must accept our King’s way of assessing our value (25–26a).

55 Greatness in the Kingdom
James and John want to sit at His right and left hands, to be as close as possible to Christ’s “prestige and authority in…the Kingdom” (Turner, 486).

56 Greatness in the Kingdom
A slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. (John 13:16)

57 Greatness in the Kingdom
The church is not a rehash of the world with some religious terms sprinkled in. It is a community of disciples who have been served so they might serve.

58 Greatness in the Kingdom
Being a citizen of Christ’s Kingdom requires a radically different perspective.

59 Greatness in the Kingdom
Unlike all other world leaders, our King had no fear of losing His position.

60 Greatness in the Kingdom
In Christ, we have already died and been raised as sons and daughters. Our status is secure, and this gives us freedom to serve – even when it is uncomfortable and costly.

61 Greatness in the Kingdom
it is not this way among you (26)

62 Greatness in the Kingdom
We do not determine our value or worth through where we sit, what power we have, or how many people sit under us.

63 Greatness in the Kingdom
As we serve, the Spirit works through our serving to cultivate within us Christ-like humility, compassion, strength, and perspective, making us more like our Savior – that’s greatness in the Kingdom.

64 Greatness in the Kingdom
2. We must desire spiritual greatness (26b–27).

65 Greatness in the Kingdom
Jesus never condemns the disciples’ desire for greatness.

66 Greatness in the Kingdom
As Platt writes, “In Christ’s kingdom, sacrificial service defines Kingdom greatness.” McNeil adds this, “to serve is to reign.”

67 Greatness in the Kingdom
As Platt writes, “In Christ’s kingdom, sacrificial service defines Kingdom greatness.” McNeil adds this, “to serve is to reign.”

68 Greatness in the Kingdom
In the world’s system, very few can be great, and the great ones must always wonder when their greatness will die. But, greatness in the Kingdom of God is available to all, and it never dies.

69 Greatness in the Kingdom
Sacrificial service is the God-given way we pursue spiritual greatness. Greatness comes thru “following the steps of Jesus on the path of sacrificial service” (Turner, 485).

70 Greatness in the Kingdom
We need to trade our excuses for a renewed passion for spiritual greatness.

71 Greatness in the Kingdom
If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all. Mark 9:35

72 Greatness in the Kingdom
3. We must see Jesus as the model for our service (28).

73 Greatness in the Kingdom
In one of Scripture’s most jaw-dropping statements, we learn the Son of Man came to serve us by meeting our deepest need – salvation (28).

74 Greatness in the Kingdom
“Jesus willingly walked into the jaws of suffering and death on our behalf” (Platt, 271).

75 Greatness in the Kingdom
To be a servant and slave like Jesus means to be completely available to be used by God.

76 Greatness in the Kingdom
What unnecessary limits are you putting on your availability to serve?

77 Greatness in the Kingdom
Those who belong to Christ as His disciples will surely drink His cup of sacrificial service.

78 Greatness in the Kingdom
We are saved through Christ’s service for the sake of service because the Spirit works through our serving to make us more like Jesus and show the world there is a better way, a better Kingdom, a better life that comes through our infinitely better King.

79 Greatness in the Kingdom
As Eric Watkins writes, “when we serve one another, we dramatically embody what it means to take up our cross and follow Jesus. We participate in Christ’s display of His love toward His church. We also demonstrate that we do not belong to the world and are thus not enslaved by its selfish passions,

80 Greatness in the Kingdom
thereby testifying even to those outside the church that true freedom is in Christ. The church is thus a theatre of redemption, service, and love as it lives out the gospel before a world that is still enslaved by sin, selfishness, and unbelief.”

81 Greatness in the Kingdom
North Roanoke, this Valley will come to see how beautiful and worthy and glorious King Jesus is when we live for our King as our King lived for us – when we come together to give ourselves to one another as Christ gave Himself to us,

82 Greatness in the Kingdom
salvation will become ever-more rooted in our lives, and Christ will grow ever-more attractive to a world that is lost and dying in its futile quest for fleeting greatness. North Roanoke, let’s be great in the Kingdom of God – our Great King deserves nothing less.

83 We Remember the Lord’s Supper

84 We Remember the Lord’s Supper

85 My Jesus I Love Thee

86 For Thee all the follies
My Jesus I love Thee I know Thou art mine For Thee all the follies Of sin I resign

87 My Gracious Redeemer My Savior art Thou If ever I loved Thee My Jesus ‘tis now

88 Thou hast first loved me And purchased my pardon
I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me And purchased my pardon On Calvary’s tree

89 I love Thee for wearing The thorns on Thy brow If ever I loved Thee My Jesus ‘tis now

90 In mansions of glory And endless delight I’ll ever adore Thee In heaven so bright

91 I’ll sing with the glittering
Crown on my brow If ever I loved Thee My Jesus ‘tis now
