Classroom Rules & Expectations
D-302 Biology
2
Course Description Welcome to Biology! This is a year course will earn you 1.0 science credit. Over the course of this year we will develop an understanding of lab safety, unifying themes of life, and the proper use of microscope. We will also focus on the relationship between structure, composition, function, and classification of the prokaryotic, eukaryotic cell, all living organisms and use of energy to carry out the functions of life. Other concepts will include how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring, genetic disorder, genetic engineering and human biology.
3
What will I be learning in biology this year?
4
Prerequisite Conceptual Physics & Chemistry (see ASAP me if you have not completed the prerequisites)
5
Text book… Honors (pd. 5&6): Modern Biology
Your textbook is available online! Let me know if you would like this. Text book… Biology (pd. 2, 3, 4): Biology, by Miller & Levine (dragon fly cover)
6
Required Materials… Binder/folder, notebook paper towel last Friday
Helpful NOT required…color pencils, tape or glue & ear phones Other Working address with access to it (know your password to get in). Internet access. ACCESS! You can come here or go to the library before school, during wiki/lunch, or sign up for my ELO. You can also go to a neighbor, friend, family, etc. Last resort…ask me for the paper copy.
7
28 _____% Assignments… Assignments include both class work & homework.
You will be assigned class work AND homework every single day. Class work should be completed by the end of the class period (unless specified otherwise). Paper homework will be turned in at the beginning of the next period (unless specified otherwise). Computer homework is assigned a week in advanced and due that day first thing in the morning. No LATE WORK will be accepted at all! Be responsible and complete all assignments when they are due! I repeat!! NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!!!
8
_____% Exams & Friday’s Wrap Up Quiz
47 Exams will be announced approximately 1 week in advance. Every Friday you will take a wrap up QUIZ. This quiz will test you on the material that was covered during the WEEK. Unsure if you missed an exam or a quiz? Check the white board – you have 1 week to make up a missed test or quiz. Treat quizzes like exams. You take more quizzes then exams in a quarter. The number of points received from quizzes are worth just as much as a test. Not doing well on quizzes can drop your grade tremendously.
9
_____% Projects 10 Each quarter you will be assigned a project. Projects range in points from points. Projects will focus on the current topic being covered during that quarter. First quarter is a design of a controlled experiment. Second quarter focuses around the cell, third quarter the focus is genetics & GMO while fourth quarter is a cumulative project covering what you learned over the course of the entire year. Failure to complete a quarter project will drop your grade an entire letter grade.
10
_____% Organization (notebook and binder)
10 Binder/folder – although most of our “work” is done online or in our notebook, there will be times you receive “paper” that must be kept in a place where you will have access to it throughout the year. At the end of every quarter, you will turn in a binder or folder containing these handouts. Notebook – all lecture notes, textbook notes, research notes will be written in your notebook. You will bring this notebook to class every single day. It is also a good idea to take your notebook home to help you complete homework assignment and to help study for quizzes and exams.
11
_____% Bell work…directly attached to attendance!!
5 _____% Bell work…directly attached to attendance!! YOU WILL come to class on TIME every single day. YOU WILL always enter through the back door. YOU WILL read the AGENDA. It tells you if you need to pick up a computer, what class work” to pick up and what “paper work” to turn in. YOU WILL complete the day’s BELL work. Your bell can be a review of the previous days work or an introduction to new material. YOU WILL do ALL OF THIS before the tardy bell even rings!
12
Grades… Check with the office for user ID and password for PowerSchool login information. Note!!! Grades are NOT updated daily! Grades will be updated approximately every 2 weeks Some items are put in immediately while others can take up to 2 weeks. Your grade is based on the following:
13
Make up work… Excused absence make-up work procedure… At home, check the school website and QUIA for assignments that can be done while you are out. Show me your EXCUSED NOTE from either your parent or doctor the day you return to school. Come in the day you return to school for your make up work. Before school, during wiki, lunch or after school. DO NOT USE CLASS TIME TO GRAB MAKE UP WORK! If a lab, quiz or exam was missed, you must make an appointment with me for a make up time. I will provide your “paper work” with a specific allotted time that must be turned in on that due date. Web assignments must be completed on the original due date unless I specify otherwise. Unexcused absences will result in F grade or zero grades! Extended absences must be approved by the Principal to be counted as excused absences..
14
Daily Procedure…learn this!! WILL BE ON THE Quiz!
YOU WILL come to class on time. YOU WILL enter through the back door. YOU WILL read the overhead agenda. YOU WILL pick up required items and/or handouts. YOU WILL turn in any paper work into the box located in the center of the room before the tardy bell rings. YOU WILL sit in your assigned seat every single day. YOU WILL begin the day’s bell work before the tardy bell rings. YOU WILL try your absolutely best to be successful in passing this class. This means completing and turning in all assignments, staying focused at all times, not be disruptive to those around you and study! YOU WILL turn in the completed class assignments into the clear turn in basket when the release bell rings.

Classroom Rule & Expectation #1
Follow directions, all policies and all procedures. Follow directions the 1st time I give them. If you missed the directions, ask a neighbor. Ask 2 neighbors. Follow all polices and procedures as outlined in the Kealakehe High School Handbook and as outlined by my syllabus.
16
Classroom Rule & Expectation #2
Respect yourself, others and your environment. Absolutely NO put-downs or ANY name calling! Respect others' rights to learn and do not disrupt the class. Swearing, obscene gestures, etc. are not appropriate! Take care of lab equipment and keep this class clean. Pick up litter & erase graffiti if you see any.
17
Classroom Rule & Expectation #3
Be in your assigned seat and working on the table of contents and assigned bell work when the tardy bell rings. If you're late, come in quietly, grab handouts and sit down. We will meet after class regarding the tardy.
18
Classroom Rule & Expectation #4
Keep a professional learning environment. Be prepared. Bring the required binder/folder with paper and notebook, writing utensil, required materials, and be ready to learn! Leave food and drinks outside of the class. Exception: drinking water in a bottle, gum (I don’t want to hear it or see it), breath mints, cough drops only! These items must be disposed in its proper container otherwise this privilege will be revoked! Follow KHS “Acceptable Electronic Use Policy”. Which states “Students are not allowed to use personal cell phones, iPODs, MP3 players, and gaming devices during any class period for any reason unless it is specifically relevant to the lesson being taught. Administrators shall enforce a “zero tolerance” rule and students failing to comply shall be suspended for no less than 5 days on the first offense. Listening to music on class computer is NOT allowed.
19
The breaking of a classroom rule and/or expectation…
If any classroom rule or expectation is not followed, you will receive detention. If you continue to disregard these rules and/or expectations, a call home will be made with a referral to follow.
20
Successful Academics…
Attend class daily. Even if you're absent just 1 day you will fall behind, feel lost, and overwhelmed. Unexcused absences will result in “F” and zeros for whatever was due on that day, as well as zero for that day's work. Excused absences - Must be cleared at the office with a note from parent or doctor. See section "Make-Up Work" Come to class on time If you're late, come in quietly, grab handouts and sit down. We will meet after class regarding the TARDY. Don't lie or cheat... As a result you will receive an automatic zero and possibly administrative action!
21
Extra help… I am available to give you extra help, just make an appointment with me. We can meet before & lunch (with an appointment). ***NOTE*** I am not always available during wiki and lunch. If I am here, I’ll more than happy to meet with you. To make the most of your time, make an appointment for us to meet before or after school.
22
Other… You get 3 hall passes a quarter. Each pass is worth 10 points. Right now…you are holding 30 points extra credit!
23
What do I expect from you this year?
I EXPECT YOU TO WORK HARD. I work hard and spend a lot of time making this class interesting, enjoyable, and full of biology content. I expect you to put in the same amount of work and effort. I EXPECT YOU TO COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS. I will never come to class unprepared – I expect the same from you. I EXPECT 100% EFFORT! Some of this stuff we are going to learn this year is difficult…all I ask is that you TRY. I EXPECT YOU TO STUDY! Everything you learn from day 1 will build on eachother till our last day together. If you don’t learn it now, you are going to have a very difficult time in the long run. You have to study!
