1 Chapter 9: Chemical Names and Formulas
Naming ions Naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds

2 Learning Targets You will:
Determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. Know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

3 You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound.
Nomenclature Nomenclature is the language of chemistry – it’s how we read and write. Ionic compounds consist of a positive metal ion (cation) and a negative nonmetal ion (anion) combined in the simplest whole number proportion so the charges add up to a net charge of zero. It’s important to learn about the ions that form ionic compounds. For example, the ionic compound sodium chloride (NaCl) consists of one sodium ion (Na +) and one chloride ion (Cl –). You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

4 Ions Ions Monatomic Loses electrons Name is cation name
Single atom with positive charge Loses electrons Name is cation name Single atom with negative charge Gains electrons Name is root or stem plus -ide Polyatomic More than one atom with a charge Name is polyatomic ion name You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

5 You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound.
Ions Bisulfite (hydrogen sulfite) Bisulfate (hydrogen sulfate) Bicarbonate (hydrogen carbonate) Acetate (ethanoate) ammonium nitrate sulfate phosphate You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

6 You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound.
Helpful tip You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

7 Metals that form more than one ion
Metals NOT in group 1, 2 or 3 Roman numeral necessary = charge on individual cation; comes AFTER cation name Few with one ionic charge (similar to groups 1-3) Silver, Ag Cadmium, Cd Nickel, Ni Zinc, Zn Old system name - ous: lower charge on cation - ic: higher charge on cation Can memorize OR calculate using the anion charge You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

8 Writing formulas for ionic compounds
Write the formula symbols Assign the charges KNOW YOUR ION CHARGES Roman numeral = charge on cation Sum the charges to a net charge of zero (a MUST for ionic compounds) and apply as subscripts. Subscript = # of each ion so NO charge IF a subscript is needed for the polyatomic ion, put the polyatomic ion in PARENTHESES with the subscript outside of it. Be sure ions are in simplest whole number ratio. You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

9 Naming ionic compounds
The cation is named first and comes from its element or polyatomic ion name. If your cation is not in groups 1-3, use a roman numeral after it to indicate the charge. The anion is named second and is named by taking the root of its element name and adding –ide or from the polyatomic ion name . NO PREFIXES!!! You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound. You will know the formula and name for common polyatomic ions and incorporate these ions in naming and constructing formulas.

10 You will determine the name and/or formula of an ionic compound.
