1 Seed Balls Suitable for all ages Seeds balls can be a great way of growing flowers in unexpected places. The clay in the balls protects the seeds from being eaten by birds and rodents before they can germinate. Making seed balls can be very messy so make sure you wear an apron and work outside if you can. You will need: 3-4 packets of seeds (you can use anything you like; packets of mixed wildflower seeds work well) Compost or soil from your garden 1 packet of air-dry clay Water Greaseproof or baking paper for drying Mix about 5 parts clay to 2 parts compost in a bowl (there is no need to be precise). Add a small amount of water and mix together. Add your packets of seeds and mix well. 2. Keep mixing until all the seeds are distributed evenly and you have a mixture like dough, not too wet and not too dry. Top tip – don’t add too much water. Start by adding a small amount and add more if you need it. If it looks too wet, add a bit more compost. 3. Shape the dough into small balls and place onto greaseproof/baking paper to dry. This could take a few days. Once the balls are dry, you can package them and sell them to support You Grow-They Grow. The seed balls should last a while as long as you keep them dry. Seed balls can be thrown into the garden anywhere you like! When it rains, the water should get into the balls and the seeds will germinate, creating new plants. A strategic health initiative from Project HOPE UK
