Democratic Report Change & Represent Annual Report pt. 1
Student Elections and Student Ideas

Democratic participation 2017
Voters Student Election 2016 (part 2) voters 5% +2% Sabbatical Election ,607 voters 44% +3% Unique to Sabb Election 4,938 voters 57% Student Election 2017 (part 1) 1,201 voters 6% - 3% Student Ideas plus Student Elections Student Ideas 6,404 voters 32% +22% All voters ,438 voters 63% +3% We could not produce accurate unique figures in the past, although we estimated participation last year to be around 60% in total.

Student Population Total Students: 21,179 FTE: 19,771 The Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) condenses interrupted students and part-time students as well as single-semester students into a figure which is the number of taught students at an institution, carrying out a full year’s worth of courses. This number is reported to the higher Education Statistical Authority by Universities every year; once the year is complete. The FTE given here is an estimate.

Student Population Numbers can be expressed in absolute terms, or as percentages – there is a model used which expresses a percentage as though it were a person – this is the “100 people in the world” model. If there were 100 students at Exeter, then the Colleges would look like this: Social Sciences and International Studies 20 (4,227 students) Humanities (4,154 students) Business School (3,884 students) Life & Environmental Sciences 16 (3,375 students) Engineering, Maths & Physical Sciences 13 (2,800 students) Medical School (1,373 students) INTO (688 students) FCH (655 students)

Student Population

Student Population

Student Population Why break it down this way? It makes comparison work easier to understand – if we told you that 36% of voters were in CSSIS you might assume that the turnout for CSSIS was 36% - which could be wrong. (It would only be correct if every College had exactly the same turnout so that 36% of voters was the same as 36% of all students)

Student Ideas For Student Ideas, the year runs from the point of handover between Guild Council until the end of the new Council term of office. This means that reporting for this period starts on Thursday 14 April – 13 days before the handover date of Wednesday 4 May 2016. This allows Student Ideas which close after handover to be counted in the democratic year of the sitting Guild Council. The term of office for ends on 1 May 2017 – the new year starts with those Ideas which will pass using the new scoring system, submitted on or after 17 April 2017.
