INTRODUCTION The Integrated Operational Plan for Ballast Water Management in the Adriatic is a practical regional framework for implementing the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments – BWM Convention (London, 2004) in the countries along the Adriatic Sea. The Integrated Operational Plan for Ballast Water Management in the Adriatic is based on the results of activities carried out in the BALMAS project (Ballast Water Management System for Adriatic Sea Protection). Scope and Principles The aim of the Integrated Operational Plan for Ballast Water Management in the Adriatic is to provide regional activities that need to be implemented in order to mitigate the transfer of Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens (HAOPs) with ships’ ballast water. The Integrated Operational Plan for Ballast Water Management in the Adriatic includes principles, measures and guidelines established by the BWM Convention (IMO, 2004), as relevant principles, requirements, agreements and legislation on the marine environment and biodiversity protection.
