Whose Grammar: Compound Predicates, Alliteration, Adjectives, and Adverbs. Writing: Over the next 4 to 6 weeks we will working on a poetry unit. We will create a portfolio of poems(rhyming, haiku, found poems, research poems, Bio Poems, Cinquain, Free Verse, etc.) Reading/Language/Spelling Main Selections: Fox in Sox by Dr. Suess, Picture Puzzle Piece by Shel Silverstein, Danny O’Dare by Shel Silverstein. Comprehension: Students will compare and contrast ideas in a poem and make connections to their own person experiences and points of view. They will also identify main idea, author’s purpose, mood, and theme of a poem *Comprehension checks will be made periodically during the week. Fluency: We will focus on Rate this week. *I will take a G1 fluency grade every Friday. Target Vocabulary: *Test on Friday, February 24th. February 13 – 24 Vocabulary Poetry – written or spoken rhythmical composition Alliteration – having the same letter or sound at the beginning of words clos tone another Adjectives – modify nouns and pronouns; answer questions “which one,” “what kind,” or “how many” Adverbs – modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs; answer the questions “how,” “when,” and “where” Rhyme – have or end with a sound that corresponds (is the same as) to another Rhyme scheme – the ordered pattern of rhyme that comes at the end of each line of poetry Rhythm – the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem Beat – the stressed and unstressed syllables that create the rhythm of a poem Syllables – units of pronunciation having one vowel sound forming part or all of a word. Lines – the individual lines of words in a poem Stanzas – an arrangement of lines forming a division of a poem Repetition – the action of repeating something that has already been said or written Reminders *Check and sign your child’s homework folder each night. *Practice fluency each night for 1 minute, three times. *Poem will be recited before the class on or before February 28th. Please practice with your child. Extra time will not be given. If you have misplaced the poem, you can find a copy on our website under “poems.”
