3 Flu vaccination – key messages
The following are taken from Public Health England’s training for healthcare practitioners: Winter pressure - Flu immunisation is one of the most effective interventions immunisers can provide to reduce harm from flu and pressures on health and social care services during the winter Preventing complications - Increasing flu vaccine uptake in clinical risk groups is important because of increased risk of death and serious illness if people in these groups catch flu Children more vulnerable to infection than adults when exposed Reducing spread of flu Children with flu contribute to the burden of flu in all age groups because they are more likely to pass on the infection than adults Vaccination of health and social care workers protects them & reduces risk of spreading flu to their patients, service users, colleagues and family members Working with the people of Camden to achieve the best health for all

5 Flu vaccination 2016-17 – Uptake ambitions

6 Flu vaccination 2016-17 – Changes & payments
Nationally School Children’s programme extended to school years 1, (ages 5-8) Morbidly obese not recommended in annual National Flu Immunisations Programme 2016/17 letter by DoH & PHE (It is however still in Green Book) Directed Enhanced Service (DES) for unchanged from last year Locally There will be a LES with stretch targets for achievement like previous years Funding for extra services (e.g. invites, hubs, HCAs) tbc Communication from Primary Care soon Working with the people of Camden to achieve the best health for all

National flu programme flu letter includes an 11 item GP practice checklist. Key themes are: Appoint a flu coordinator Registers & information Meeting targets Robust call & recall Maximising uptake Working with the people of Camden to achieve the best health for all

Appointment a flu Coordinator Check your registers & vaccine stock Plan your clinics – consider weekends Plan your recall process & invite templates Use of Docmail, iPlato etc Train + brief all staff to support opportunistic invites Prepare IT Tools (due end of month) Review your at-risk searches (particularly pregnant patients) Housekeeping – removing old diary entries on EMIS Web Configure triggers for protocols Install waiting room video Working with the people of Camden to achieve the best health for all

The following tools will be released to practices in a package at the end of this month along with a user-guide: Searches – for call/recall & uptake reports Protocol to automate coding of vaccine + issue script Protocol to support opportunistic invites Fortnightly activity report (starting mid October) Working with the people of Camden to achieve the best health for all

Annual flu programme by GOV UK & Public Health England - leaflets, letter templates, guidance, education slides & more Reminder services: - iPlato text reminder service to sent texts to eligible patients - Docmail for mail mering letter invites - PatientChase for targeted call/recall by letter for free text + voic reminder service offered by Sanofi Pasteur IT / Tools Support Managing flu season with EMIS Web – IT guides for remote support or a practice visit Payment for DES payment queries for LCS payment queries PPA Website – for prescription reimbursement queries Working with the people of Camden to achieve the best health for all
