2-2 Solving One-Step Equations
Goals: Solve linear equations using addition and subtraction. Solve linear equations using multiplication and division. Eligible Content: A / A / A
2
Vocabulary Linear Equation – variable is raised to the first power and is not inside a square root, absolute value or in the denominator of a fraction. Examples: 5 + 2x = 15 16 – 3x = 19
3
Vocabulary Equivalent Equations – equations that have the same solution. Inverse Operations – operations that undo each other. Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division
4
Vocabulary Isolate the variable – a process used to solve an equation that gets the variable alone. Reciprocal – the flip of a fraction EXAMPLE: 2 and ½ are reciprocals When you are dividing by a fraction, you have to multiply by the reciprocal.
5
Vocabulary Addition Property of Equality – If the same value is added to both sides of an equation, the two sides remain equal. Multiplication Property of Equality – If the same number is multiplied by both sides of an equation, the two sides remain equal.
6
Addition and Subtraction Examples
Solve each equation: x + 6 = 10 x – 4 = 8 -3 + x = 10 7 + x = 16 x = 4 x = 12 x = 13 x = 9
7
Addition and Subtraction Examples
8 – (-y) = 15 n = -12 x = 1 y = 7
