The term ‘product’ is a general term used by in music industry to refer to the material that musicians sell. ‘Product’ is usually recorded music or tickets to a live show, but it could also be software, equipment, merchandise, apps or many other things. Product is a good word because it is not precise and can be used as a term that covers a wide range of things in a changing world. 2. Bruno Mars new perfume ‘Chimp’ product launch. Concert tour by new boy band sensation ‘Feeling Tight’ fresh from their win on Britain’s Talented Teens. Gig by classical violin sensation Mimi Cesare (aged 8) and her accompanist brother Carl (aged 10). Small-scale UK tour by American metal band ‘Fnat’, famous for their mix of pyrotechnics, power tools and punk. Relaunch of local club night ‘Skank’ – ‘a tasty blend of urban beats blended with edgy dance and techno energy” – following their rebuild after the gas explosion last Christmas. DRAFT [Teacher notes for PS 7] You can edit or change the tasks here to suit the learners’ interests and enthusiasms. You should cover a range of topics, issues and challenges to allow learners to explore their creative potential. Include some non-music product such as a perfume, fashion item, book or other product. Where possible, use fictional bands/artists so learners cannot refer to pre-existing fan or band material. Include music across the spectrum – classical, metal, folk, etc. Introduce the tasks to the whole class and ask for their initial reactions. Build groups with care – for example, allow learners to work with those from other musical persuasions and backgrounds, boys to work with girls, etc. Steer groups to produce ideas, to be creative rather than negative. Learners may rebel against the financial background to the task. This should be countered by discussion on niche and specialism in the marketplace – how can niche music survive?
