GROUNDS Short for ‘background’, a ground is the very first layer of paint (or other wet medium) applied to an artwork. It is an undercoat, that can be covered entirely by another media, or left visible in the final work. Step 1: Create at 3 "Grounds" (Pick 3 from below) - Frottage (texture rubbings) - Watercolor Washes/drips (or with salt) - Gesso and Acrylic - Found materials (Cardboard, book pages, envelopes, newspapers, wood) with or without paint) - Tissue Paper scrunched/glued - Wallpaper, textured paper Splatter or drips, Paint with roller, credit card or ??

Step 2: Brainstorm Subject Matter
- Create list of interesting subject matter (Household items, people, human form, plants, fruits/veggies, etc) - Look for unusual shapes (don't just pick the first flower/ viewpoint you see!!) - Dissect the item (cut it, break it open, look at it from all angles) - Complete research drawings/sketches in your sketchbook to practice Thumbnail sketches
