Transportation Engineers

Many of the concepts and principles are found in civil engineering
Transportation engineers focus on the design of roads and highways so that traffic can operate in an efficient and safe manner. Many of the concepts and principles are found in civil engineering

What does it take to become a transportation engineer?

Subjects to Study in High School
Key Requirements Problem-solving, creativity, ability to think logically, teamwork skills, effective written and verbal skills Subjects to Study in High School Physics, chemistry, algebra, geometry, calculus, English, computer science and environmental science

Education and Training

Transportation engineers must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering for entry-level positions. Some employers prefer a graduate degree for certain jobs

Specialize in traffic engineering, which is 1 of 17 engineering specialties and a branch of civil engineering, by attending an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited engineering program in college.

Nearly half of those working today hold master's degrees or PhDs, which may be required for research positions. A PhD is necessary for university-level teaching positions.

Licensing

Demonstrate their competency by pursuing licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.E)
Earning an engineering degree from an accredited program. Successfully completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Working as an engineer for at least 4 years. Take the Civil Engineering-Transportation exam and received a passing score.

Training, Other Qualifications

Transportation engineers continue their education by reading technical publications and attending seminars and conferences.

On the job

Entry level civil engineer prepare design plans, construction documents and estimates for projects ranging from highway interchanges, subway reconstruction, parking facilities and public spaces

Use project management software such as Microsoft Project and specific engineering software, such as: Computer aided design (CAD) software, such as Autodesk AutoCAD and Trafficware SimTraffic software.

Mid to senior level transportation engineer, work with a variety of multi-disciplinary projects involving highway design. Responsibilities will include: preparing detailed plans including geometry, drainage, specifications, and estimates; preparing project proposals outlining scope and budget
