History In the United States as an example, the term public relations was first used by President Thomas Jefferson in his “Seventh Address to the Congress” in 1807 World War I, Edward L. Bernaysmade massive verbal and written communications effort to achieve support of the war In 1903, public relations became a profession as Ivy Lee advised John D. Rockfeller. Rockefeller owned coal mines and the Pennsylvania railroads. Ivy Lee succeeded and professionalized public relations by three basic principles; “tell the truth, provide accurate facts and gaining access to top management to influence decisions.

History Samuel Adams coordinated public relations for the revolutionary war by organizing the sons of liberty, developing the liberty tree symbol and staged the Boston Tea Party. Joseph V.Baker became the public relations consultant with Pennsylvania Railroads after leaving his job as a city editor in 1934. Bursonemphasized public relations in building his agency, BursonMarsteller which is one of the largest agencies in the world today. Baxter and her husband also founded the first public relations agency for political campaign management.

Who they are Public relations refer to the actual relationship that exists between a company and its people which involves the company performing good deeds rather than talking – Ivy Lee. Public relations consultants: individuals who represent and provide positive information for a company to build good relationships between the company and its publics. Basic role: communicate information to the masses (public) Activities: provide information to the media and analyze improvements made by the company. Duties: communication, publication, maintaining relationships, organizing public events, strategizing and conducting research. Generally expected to maintain good communication networks and possess creative and innovative skills due to the nature of their job.

Maintaining the developers reputation Refinement of an idea Contract negotiations Formal opening Property management Public Relations can be involved at any stage where the company needs to correspond and maintain it’s image with any public (employees, partners, community, politicians lobbyists, etc)

Training Degree in a communications-related area. Eg. Public Relations or Journalism Skills High level communication skills (written and verbal). Multi-tasking and time management. Media background or training to understand how this works. Organizational and planning skills. Work well under pressure (answering questions etc)

Challenge: large influx causes spam Websites: share information that polishes the image and agenda of a company New media Social media and Blogging. Challenge: negative stories spinning out of control
