Earth and Space science. History of space explorations. Art – The Artist Peter Thorpe (Space Art) Hyperlinked power points. ICT Literacy: Descriptive settings, newspaper report and explanation texts.

Topics for Year 5 Autumn 2 – Highwayman Science forces.
History – exploring and older text. Art – Sketching and ink work. Literacy: Poetry with be the main focus and responding appropriately to a text.

Topics for Year 5 Spring 1 - Expeliarmus (Harry Potter)
JK Rowling- significant author. Literacy: biographies, film narrative and instructions. DT – sewing – Hogwarts badge Geography – grid references. Science – separating materials.

Topics for Year 5 Spring 2 – Woeful World War Two (Eden camp visit)
History – evacuees, rations, significant dates. Geography – UK study – comparing the countryside with the city. Science – materials DT – food Literacy: Descriptive writing and diary writing. Text focus: The Lion and the Unicorn.

Topics for Year 5 Summer 1 –Around The World In 80 Days (Residential)
Literacy – persuasive writing and preparation work for residential. Science – life cycles Geography – exploring an environmental issue. DT – creating a 3D project. History – briefly explore the Aztecs (stand alone).

Literacy – narrative poetry and stories from other cultures. Science – types of change. Geography – exploring different settlements. History – learn about the Ancient Greeks. DT – pottery – clay.

Styles of reading in school
Daily reading / RWI / guided comprehension. Individual reading turns Hooked on a Book Reading for home: Free choice books (as many as wanted) Reading scheme (books and home/school diaries to be handed in on a Monday for a new book that day).

Spellings in school SPAG Taught spelling patterns / rules
Children must be able to apply these spellings across a range of written work. Spelling log books.

Grammar (recapping previous years)
Nouns, pronouns Adverbs and adverbial phrases Expressing time and cause through: conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions Subordinate clauses The present perfect tense

Grammar Relative clauses (who, which, when, that, and where…)
A wider range of adverbs. Use of modal verbs in their writing. (We should be finished pretty soon!) Commas used correctly to avoid ambiguity. Rachel Ray finds inspiration in cooking her family and her dog. Convert nouns or adjectives into verbs (e.g. intense = intensify).

Handwriting Children in Year 5 are expected to join fluently.
Never join after a capital letter. Some letters are ‘break letters’ b, p, z, g, y Letter formation
