KEY CONCEPT Biology is the study of all forms of life.
2
Earth is home to an incredible diversity of life.
The biosphere includes all living things and all the places they are found. biosphere = everywhere life exists
3
Earth is home to an incredible diversity of life.
Every part of the biosphere is connected with every other part. The biosphere includes many environments. land environments
4
The biosphere includes many environments.
saltwater and freshwater environments Tidepool Estuary portions of the atmosphere
5
Summary Question: Biospheres can large like an ocean or small like a pond. Give an example of a biosphere that is inside of you.
6
Biodiversity is the variety of life.
Biodiversity generally increases from the poles to the equator. Biodiversity is greater in areas with consistently warm temperatures. Biodiversity is greater closer to the equator.
7
A species is one particular type of living thing.
Members of a species can interbreed to reproduce. There are about 2 million different living species have been identified, about 10 million undiscovered. Over ½ of the species are insects Every year 10,000 species are discovered, with about 50,000 species dying out.
8
Question: Are majority of species that die out large or small? Why?
Summary Question: Are majority of species that die out large or small? Why?
9
All organisms share certain characteristics.
Biology is the scientific study of all forms of life. Bio = Life ology = study of
10
An organism is any individual living thing.
All are made of one or more cells. All organisms share certain characteristics.
11
Characteristics of organisms
All organisms are made of one or more cells. All need energy for metabolism. Energy is the ability to cause change or do work All respond to their environment. All organisms must have the ability to reproduce. DNA that they pass on to offspring.
12
Summary Question: 1) Describe biodiversity in terms of species? 2) What characteristics are shared by all living things? 3) Make a list of 5 living things and 5 non-living things.
