1 Precision Medicine, Community Engagement, and Native Health
Monday, November 14, 2016

2 Session Objectives Understand Precision Medicine and why a diverse cohort is crucial for success Describe the nuanced issues in Precision Medicine and genetic research as applied to Native populations Develop strategies to engage Native populations in discussions about and participation in Precision Medicine

3 Session Structure Videos, Reflection, and Rapid Report-Out
Introduction and Session Overview Contributors to Health Feelings about Precision Medicine Panel Response Group Table Work and Discussion Sharing of Key Ideas

4 Definition and Goal An approach to disease treatment and prevention intended to maximize effectiveness by taking into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle. Seeks to redefine our understanding of disease onset and progression, treatment response, and health outcomes through the more precise measurement of potential contributors.

5 Assumptions A precise delineation of the molecular, environmental, behavioral, and other factors that contribute to health and disease will lead to more accurate diagnoses, more rational disease prevention strategies, better treatment selection, and the development of novel therapies. Coincident with advancing the science of medicine is a changing culture of medical practice and medical research that engages individuals as partners – not just as patients or research subjects.

6 Examples Targeted treatments for cancer and cystic fibrosis that are effective in patients who share an underlying causal genotype. Information to help ensure that each patient is given the right drug at the right dose the first time. Individual genome sequencing to successfully diagnose conditions in patients with previously undiagnosed genetic diseases.
