2 What’s in it for YOU? Are you interested in learning how to draw people that look like people? Are you interested in learning how to paint in oils? How about learning to draw still life objects so realistically they might “fool the eye” of viewers into thinking your picture is a photograph?

3 This course is all about: Drawing and painting Art History:
the historical time period of the Renaissance (1400 – 1500’s) right through to the Neoclassic movement (1800’s). (During these four hundred years artists became terrific at drawing and painting people and objects.) Art History…

4 The work you do this year is important because:
It’s the background for the next two courses in this series, Advanced Painting and Drawing and AP Studio Art. In AP Studio you will actually decide on your own projects and choose your own media. But you have to learn to walk before you can run. Your Future in Art….

5 Thinking like an artist….
So get ready to stroll with me as we learn about: Art history The principles of design All kinds of drawing and painting media. Thinking creatively Making your own decisions as an artist Thinking like an artist….

8 Unit 3: Balance and the Baroque Period

9 Unit 4: Repetition and the Rococo Period

11 Unit 6: Display and Exhibition of Student Work

12 You can’t create in a vacuum. You need to LEARN about art:
Therefore there will be some lessons and assignments about art and art history. You are expected to take notes on lectures and demonstrations in your sketch book You will have written assignments You will have drawing assignments as homework You will be required to participate in and attend the High School Art Show in May. This is part of your final exam grade Requirements

13 You will, of course, be expected to follow the MHS expectations of : Be Responsible (for your work, your materials and the art room), Be Proud of all you do in here! And…… Behavior….

14 BE Respectful (to each other , to me and to the art room environment)
Respect Yourself! Don’t miss out on any work time by being late to class Display how smart you are by completing work to the best of your ability Keep your good reputation by doing your own work Since how you speak demonstrates your intelligence and character, make sure your language is appropriate for school

15 BE Respectful (to each other , to me and to the art room environment)
Respect Others! Allow others to learn by letting them focus on the teacher not you Share only positive comments about others. Be kind. Don’t create extra work for others by not cleaning up after yourself Value other people’s property as you value your own

16 Procedures Knowing what to do and when to do it!
Please come to class on time and put your belongings on the shelves provided. Get your portfolio, your project and your supplies and sit in your assigned seat. Start working as soon as possible! NO CELL PHONE USE, HEADPHONES, food or drink in class. (school policy) Please don’t make me be the cell phone police! Listen carefully whenever directions, demonstrations or teacher comments occur. Ask permission to use the lavatory and sign out and in on the sheet provided. Clean up when given the signal to do so. Clean your desk and your equipment. Store your work carefully. Stay in your seat until I dismiss you.

17 Other Items of Interest…
Sketchbooks, drawing and painting media and a portfolio will be provided. If you have trouble meeting your due dates for projects you may come in after school on Studio Hour nights or any other night with special arrangements. You may also come in during any study hall. Other Items of Interest…

PP = possible points SP = student points EP = earned points 10 = Wow! You thoroughly met this requirement! One of the best! 8 = You met this requirement. Good job! 6 = There’s something lacking here. So-so effort 4 = I have to really hunt to find evidence of this requirement. 2 = You missed the point of this requirement. Little effort made to show me you are interested. 0 = missed this one completely! What do your points mean???

20 Self Reflection Questions
Talk to me! Answer the following questions on the back of this paper. Write in full sentences. Describe your thought process for this project. What ideas did you consider? Why did you solve the problem in this way? Which elements of art are strongest in this project (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space)? Which principles of art did you have to consider (balance, emphasis, rhythm, movement, unity/variety or proportion)? They are REQUIRED!! Self Reflection Questions
